Rabbonim in Petach Tikvah Unite to Safeguard Kedushas Shabbos

The rabbonim of the Hadar Ganim and Ganei Hadar neighborhoods of Petach Tikvah from all the different communities; including litvish, chassidish, sephardim and dati leumi, have united with the Chief Rabbi of Petach Tikvah, HaRav Micha Halevi towards safeguarding Kedushas Shabbos. The initiative was launched in response to ongoing efforts to open the newly-refurbished indoor swimming pool year-round in the neighboring Amishav neighborhood on Shabbos. This, the rabbonim feel is a breach of the religious status quo and would significantly increase Chilul Shabbos in the public sphere. The rabbonim met with Rav Halevi, and it was decided to launch an effort to increase awareness regarding Chilul Shabbos, emphasizing they must not remain silent and permit this public Chilul Shabbos, or to lend a hand towards legitimizing registering for pool membership. When asked if one may become a pool member, Rav Halevi ruled one may not and this psak is being accepted by the rabbonim of the above-mentioned neighborhoods as well. In his letter, Rav Halevi laments the planned widespread public Chilul Shabbos, adding that becoming a member of the pool makes one a partner who aids Chilul Shabbos, adding there is no way to permit such a move. The rabbonim used their Shabbos sermons to address the matter last week, urging their kehillos to maintain and safeguard Kedushas Shabbos and not to become pool members. According to Councilman (Yahadut Hatorah) Yisrael Friedman, thousands of new Shomer Shabbos families have moved into Petach Tikvah, and the city funding of the pool was done with the understanding the pool was not going to operate on Shabbos. He adds that there is a consensus among all the rabbonim, including the ashkenazim, sephardim and dati leumi, and the communities must be encouraged not to purchase pool memberships if the pool is going to operate on Shabbos, for such a move is a “gross violation of the religious status quo in the city”. The message from City Hall is that the pool has been in existence for years and it has always operated on Shabbos and there is absolutely no change in the religious status quo. It is explained the pool was refurbished and that it operated during the tenure of the previous mayor as well, so there is absolutely nothing new. In fact, the refurbishing of the pool was completed before the municipal elections. At that time, Friedman asked Mayor Itzik Braverman, who the chareidi party backed, to refrain from reopening it until after elections to avoid a provocation regarding religious issues in Petach Tikvah prior to elections. Hence, City Hall calls the protests of the religious councilmen and rabbonim “baseless and phony”, as they are all aware of the reality that existed prior to the pool being refurbished, simply to launch an attack on Mayor Rami Greenberg. Yahadut Hatorah officials insist that Mayor Braverman had agreed that once the pool was closed to be refurbished, it would not reopen again on Shabbos and the current administration is violating this promise. DRAMA IN DEGEL HATORAH: New Chareidi Newspaper Creates Stir Across Israel

On Tuesday afternoon, Charedi journalist Yair Sharki publicized a dramatic turn of events in the Chareidi Litvish world. According to Sharki, a new Chareidi newspaper is set to be published by the name HaDegel. The paper will be published under the auspices of Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and will take the place of Yated Ne’eman. The first edition is set to be released around Shavuos. Sharki took to Twitter to explain just how groundbreaking such a move is. “In order to explain just how dramatic opening a new newspaper is in the Charedi community: When Rav Shach separated from Agudas Yisroel and built Degel Hatorah, the first thing he did was open the newspaper Yated Neeman.  When Rav Shmuel Auerbach left Degel Hatorah and opened up the Peleg Yerushalmi the first thing he did was open the newspaper Hapeles. This is the first condition of political independence.” Sharki then answered a question that was asked on the above hypothesis. “This time, Rav Kanievsky isn’t leaving anything and is pretty much the mainstream. However, the decision to open a new newspaper instead of attempting to reign in Yated Neeman (as Maran Hagaon HaRav Shteinman did in his day) points to the internal power struggles and the internal opposition present, which is very strong, and left him with no other choice.” Over the past few years, letters have been sent back and forth between the main power of ownership of Yated Neeman, U.S. businessman Shimon Glick and HaRav Kanievsky, each one pointing towards the difference of opinions between the two with regards to how the paper should be run. In light of that, and Yated Ne’eman perhaps losing their religious supervision, the new newspaper was born. The birth pangs of the new paper is a reflection of the infighting between the media moguls of Yated Ne’eman and the leaders of the Degel Hatorah movement. With this new beginning, a strong statement of disavowment is being made by Rav Kanievsky and his leadership towards Yated Ne’eman.

Petach Tikvah Mayor Greenberg Begins Yomtov Visits With Rabbonim In The Chareidi Tzibur

Petach Tikvah Mayor Rami Greenberg began his round of yomtov visits in the city with heads of the chareidi kehilla in light of tensions between his office and Yahadut Hatorah. Mayor Greenberg began with that is being labeled a “dramatic visit”. Escorted by a number of chareidim who are close to him, Greenberg visited with HaGaon Rav Mordechai Rabinowitz, Rosh Yeshivas Ohr Yisrael and one of the leading litvish rabbonim in the city. Relations between the mayor and Rav Rabinowitz have been strained, as the rabbi did not support his election bid. According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, the mayor was received warmly by Rabbi Rabinowitz, who reportedly told the mayor that “HKBH crowns kings and He is giving you the Siyata Dishmaya to run this city for the good of its residents. I hope we continue like this, with additional meetings, and we can work together for the good of the chareidi tzibur in the city”. Mayor Greenberg responded, “I am a small person, I have come to serve all the public in the city faithfully and impartially, I would be happy to continue to cooperate with the city rabbonim on all matters. I will continue to stand to the right of the chareidi public in the city on any matter and at any time.” Afterwards, Mayor Greenberg went on a yomotov visit to the residence of HaGaon Rav Efraim Fishel Motzen, son-in-law of the Admor of Sanz and Av Beis Din of Kiryat Baal Shem Tov in Petach Tikvah. Rabbi Motzen congratulated the mayor on the change that took place in the city in the municipal preparations for Pesach, which were expressed both in the cleaning of the city prior to the yomtov and in the burning of the chametz that had been greatly improved. Kikar Shabbos News adds that the mayor intends to hold several more yomtov visits to the rabbonim of the city and the communities in order to closely monitor the needs of the chareidi tzibur and to promote as many collaborations as possible. Shas Chairman Deri: Pindrus Got Into Knesset On A Sephardi Seat

At a post-election rally in Maale HaChamisha, Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri spoke, using the opportunity to proclaim the party’s success in the election, now with eight seats. As he has done in the past, he exclaimed the pollsters haven’t a clue regarding voting reality at the polls on Election Day. “I was certain the results would be strong like in the municipal elections, while the polls said otherwise” Deri stated. He added, “We have to say the truth. Pindrus was not chosen in Elad because his litvish friends did not back him, but Pindrus at the end will enter Knesset on our votes, the sephardim. I will not conduct coalition negotiations via the media. I appointed a negotiating team without sending messages or threats via the media” he added. Pindrus was unable to run for mayor in Elad after the High Court of Justice disqualified his candidacy, with the court accepting a petition challenging the legitimacy of his changing his address from Jerusalem to Elad. After the Central Election Committee conducted a recount, Yahadut Hatorah went from seven to eight seats, bringing Pindrus into Knesset. Deri was referring to Yahadut Hatorah campaigning in sephardi areas, accusing the ashkenazi chareidi party of stealing sephardi, Shas, votes. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Machlokes In Petach Tikvah Among Chareidim For And Against Mayor Greenberg

There is growing machlokes in chareidi areas of Petach Tikvah following a series of articles in the media against Petah Tikva Mayor Rami Greenberg, in which he was accused of persecuting the chareidi community in the city and changing the status quo on religious issues. As a result, leaders of the Litvish communities gathered in his office Tuesday and expressed their support for the mayor, taking a firm stand against the position of Yahadut Hatorah in the city. In an article published in Yated Ne’eman, the HaGaon HaRav Yigal Rosen, head of the Ohr Yisrael Yeshiva in the city, sharply criticized the mayor and the Shas representatives in the municipality: “In the last fifty years we have taken care of everyone, including the Sephardi public. Who raised the Sephardi tzibur in the city if not our institutions,” said Rav Rosen. “Had the Shas representatives wanted to prevent this cut that harms their institutions, they would have told the mayor: ‘We are not willing to lend a hand to this severe cut. Our institutions are also being hurt by millions of shekels.’ But their main desire is if the Ashkenazim suffer more, we are willing to suffer, too, R”L.” As a result, dozens of leaders of the Litvish communities in the city, as well as some of the institutions identified with Degel Hatorah, gathered in the city council hall late in the evening to express their protest against Greenberg’s defamation. According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, the backing of by directors of the communities and institutions that came to Greenberg was because of HaGaon Rav David Cohen, head of the Yeshivas Chevron, who told them that “it is absolutely forbidden to entangle the chareidi tzibur in a machlokes with the mayor who has not been attacking them”. The successors of the Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak have been announced at the levaya of the late rav, HaGaon HaRav Moshe Yehuda Leib Landau ZT”L, on Sunday morning. The announcement was reportedly made officially with the knowledge of the city’s rabbonim and Litvish and Chassidish Moetzos Gedolei Torah, to appoint two rabbonim; one Chasidish and one Litvish. During the Levaya of Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak, it was announced that a son, HaRav Chaim Yitzchak Isaac Landau, who has run the kashrus operation and religious services in the city, should continue as his successor together with HaRav Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt, who is close to HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, with total cooperation between them. The agreement was reached with Bnei Brak Mayor and secretary of the Moetzas Gedolei HaTorah of Degel Hatorah Avraham Rubinstein acting as a broker, as he has always followed the word of Rav Kanievsky and HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein. During the levaya on Sunday, Avraham Rubinstein announced: “With the knowledge of Gedolei Torah, Admorim and Roshei Yeshivos in Bnei Brak, it has been decided that matters of religious and kashrus in the city will be handled by the rabbonim Geonim Shlita, with total cooperation between the two. The rav’s successor as per his request, his son Rabbi Chaim Yitzchak Isaac Landau Shlita and Rav Shevach Tzvi Rosenblatt Shlita, in total cooperation. והאמת והשלום אהבו”. Rav Rosenblatt serves as Rosh Yeshivas Batei Hora’ah Bnei Brak, Elad, and Modi’in Illit. He also serves as rav of Kehillos Bnei Brak, Modi’in Illit and serves as a member of Badatz Sheiris Yisrael. He is a talmid of HaGaon HaRav Nissim Karelitz and is close to Rav Kanievsky. Rav Landau will stand at the helm of the city’s kashrus, as this was known to be his father’s wish as the niftar expressed during his life. He was appointed to head the kashrus by the niftar two years ago. According to a report from ‘Moked Chabad’, in line with what is written in the rav’s last will, Rav Isaac Landau will assume control of the city’s kashrus as well as mikvaos and marriage registration. The niftar’s son-in-law, HaGaon Rav Yosef Yitzchak Blinov, Rav of Chabad Bnei Brak and the City Center, will continue his position as being responsible for the eruv, as well as heading כולל ‘פעמי יעקב and head the לשכת ההלכה למעשה. Rav Isaac as he is known, HaGaon Rav Chaim Yitzchak Isaac Landau, is a resident of Tzefas as he served as a Ram for shiur gimmel in Yeshivas Chabad, and his father’s right-hand regarding kashrus in recent years, the kashrus network that was established by his grandfather, HaGaon HaRav Yaakov Landau ZT”L. VIDEO: IDF Unit Seeking To Arrest AWOL Lomdei Torah Continue Their Efforts

(VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) The accompanying video shows IDF personnel responsible for tracking down and arresting AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave) persons operating in Petach Tikvah’s Ganei Hadar neighborhood at 1:00 AM. In the video, the officials are looking to arrest an AWOL person affiliated with Peleg Yerushalmi, waking up neighbors with the racket they are making. Police were summoned, telling them they may not bang on the door loudly as they did, but their must break into the home or leave the premises. After police spoke with them, the members of the unit left the building. It is pointed out that the members of the Peleg follow the instructions of HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach ZT”L, who was adamant in his position, prohibiting bochrim and avreichim from cooperating with military authorities in any way. Unlike the mainstream Litvish community, in which bochrim and avreichim report to the IDF, declare limud Torah as their profession, and thereby receive a deferment from service and are eligible for funding. The Peleg followers do not report and do not fill out any forms and are therefore listed as being AWOL from military service. Their unwillingness to cooperate in any way, as per Rav Auerbach, prevent them from enjoying the same legal status enjoyed by the followers of Gedolei Torah in Bnei Brak. Yeshiva Bochrim learning in Peleg affiliated Yeshivos and supporters took to the streets on Thursday afternoon once again, protesting on Jerusalem’s Sarei Yisrael near Yafo Streets at 4:00PM against the arrest and jailing of a talmid yeshiva. The pashkavilim for the protest called on participants to shut down the area, which on a Thursday afternoon in the capital, leads to major delays very quickly, including the Jerusalem light rail. The violence escalated quickly, after protesters laid down in the street to block traffic as well as bringin the Jerusalem Light rail to a halt. Riot police were standing by waiting for the protest to begin, and quickly moved in. Police initially used their hands to try and move the massive crowd. Eventually, water cannons spraying colored bad-smelling liquid were brought in, along with dozens of police horses. Police report more than 30 arrests were made. There have been many reports of police punching the protests in the face, as well as one incident where an IDF soldier pointed his machine gun at the faces at protesters. (See those incidents documents in the videos below) IDF SOLDIER POINTS GUN AT UNARMED PROTESTERS: The Hafganos were called due to the arrest of Meir Blau, who was arrested while protesting the enlistment of women into the IDF last week. Blau (23) is a father of one and a resident of Modi’in Illit. Following his arrest, it was revealed that he himself was a draft dodger, and the police remanded him into the custody of the military police. He is currently sitting in military prison four for a four-month open sentence while waiting for the legal matters against him to be resolved. VIDEO ROUNDUP OF VIOLENCE: Meanwhile, in Yeshivas Knesset Yechezkel, in Elad, headed by HaGaon HaRav Baruch Mordechai Ettinger, a notice was posted to inform talmidim that they are prohibited from participating in the protests. It is reported that the notice prohibiting the talmidim from taking part in protests was torn down and replaced a number of times, with Kikar Shabbos News stating the talmidim affiliated with Peleg Yerushalmi tore it down a number of times. It is also reported that rabbonim in the yeshiva aligned with Peleg are against the position of the rosh yeshiva, who in the past was believed aligned with Peleg, but now, most of the bochrim in the yeshiva are affiliated with the mainstream Degel faction of litvish chareidim. MAILBAG: Former Seminary Director Discusses “Seminary Crisis”

Dear YWN Editor, I read the letter from the father of the girl who was rejected by three seminaries and while I truly appreciate his pain, there is so much that is wrong in the letter and some of the responses, that I decided to respond in the hopes of shedding some light on this issue. Why is my view any more worthy than anyone else’s? Perhaps it isn’t, but I have somewhat unique experience in this area as a former senior director of two seminaries in Eretz Yisroel for many years, as well as close to ten years working in a well-known BY high school where I’ve advised hundreds of students on seminary and dealt with every major seminary. I’ve been on both sides of the aisle – as well as having sent my own four daughters to seminary (not my own). A few important things to consider: 1 – Rejection is hard. No two ways about it. I’ve suffered it personally as a young adult and as a parent. I’ve had to beg to get some of my children into yeshivos and BY’s and it really hurts. There’s no nice way to be rejected – they all cause pain. Nothing that I’m writing is intended to ignore the pain of the original letter writer or some of the commenters who’ve clearly suffered similar pain. 2 – Blanket broad stroke statements are rarely insightful or useful. To accuse all seminary heads of being conniving and wicked thieves is an expression of pain, but not an expression of anything that is remotely useful or insightful. Claiming that ALL girls must go to seminary or that seminary is a TOTAL waste of money or that NO ONE can get a shidduch if they don’t attend seminary – all of this is silly talk and not reflective of reality. Is Seminary mandatory? Clearly, no one thinks that a girl must go to seminary. The chassidishe world virtually doesn’t send, and many in the litvishe world don’t either. I don’t have current statistics on hand, but in traditional NY and NJ Beis Yaakov’s, a good part of each class does not attend seminary or attends in the US. Out of town BY’s tend to be more encouraging of the seminary trend and there are good reasons for that. Regardless, a good number of students [possibly as high as 15-20% of the litvishe world] do not attend seminary. I’m unaware of any statistics that demonstrate that these students are somehow less capable of marrying, bearing children, or reciting brachos. If it’s not mandatory, why do BY’s encourage it and why is there so much pressure? We can either assume it’s because they’re all dimwitted, evil, on-the-take, or they believe that there’s a value to attending seminary that supersedes the cost and application process difficulties. In most cases, it’s the latter. Mechanchim and mechanchos have all witnessed first-hand the benefits a year in EY can do – especially for a student who is interested in growing and not just having a “blast” with her friends. Out-of-town BY students often have very few students like them in their class/school, and attending a seminary in EY with similarly-raised students, can do wonders for them. Sometimes students simply couldn’t thrive in their familiar environments and the year away

Amazing Highlights of Remarkable Achdus at Dirshu Convention

It was joyous, it was inspiring it was unforgettable! If you want to be inspired, moved by seeing how thousands of yidden and their families have been transformed by being part of an accountable limud haTorah program, watch highlights of the recent Dirshu Convention here! Led by Gedolei Yisrael representing the entire cross-section of Torah observant Jewry, the recent Dirshu Convention was not just a convention is was a demonstration, a rally that showed that Torah learning can be sweet for every Jew. No matter who you are and no matter what you do. At a time when unity often seems so elusive, the Convention recently held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel was one featured wonderful achdus. Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Chassidish, Litvish, American and Heimish – all were there with one goal, to learn and know Torah. The word achdus, however, is perhaps a misnomer. The Convention crystallized the fact that when the common denominator is thirst for yedias haTorah, an unending drive to know Torah and learn with accountability all outer trappings fade. The sight of a Skverer Chossid deep in conversation with a government employee from Baltimore debating a pshat in Tosafos isn’t achdus. There was never anything substantial separating them! The outer levush is so insignificant in relation to their absolutely identical, inner core of Torah. The sight of a Sephardic baal habayis deep in conversation with a Litvish kollel yungerman from Lakewood and a Satmar Chossid from Monroe clarifying a difficulty in hilchos Shabbos with a Detroit native, is not achdus. There was never anything significant separating them! At a Dirshu convention when all are deeply bound together, united through Torah regardless of outer trappings, one feels an inkling of that exalted day to come when we will all come together under the banner of Moshiach!   Watch and enjoy!

COPE: The School That Is Not A School

There is an intriguing black-and-white picture in the Agudah’s historical archives. Dating back to 1880, it shows a laborer sitting at his Shabbos table on the Lower East Side. Some things about the shomer Shabbos community have stayed the same for hundreds of years: There’s a braided challah, what looks like a salt shaker, and a nice place setting. But the setting of the photo is telling. The man is sitting in a tiny room – a converted coal cellar. There’s a shovel right next to him. He looks like he lives in poverty and his expression tells us that this was the best room he was able to afford. And other things that have stayed the same for hundreds of years: Parnassah has been a challenge for our community – as it has been to the general population – for as far back as the shomer Shabbos community has existed in the United States. The Agudah has engaged with this challenge for decades, and COPE, Agudah’s first parnassah initiative, started in 1977 to teach people the skills they needed to get jobs in IT and computer programming. But it changed its focus some years back, according to R’ Daniel Baumann, COPE’s director. Big companies started outsourcing their IT positions to India and the market for programmers and IT professionals was shrinking. COPE pivoted to accounting programs. But not the traditional accounting degree path – at least, not at first. “We have unique programs,” says R’ Baumann. “We offer a junior accounting program, completely separate for both men and women, which can be completed in three to six months, depending on one’s schedule, as well as a Bachelor’s degree program whose graduates are eligible to sit for the CPA exams.” Yeshiva and Bais Yaakov graduates are particularly suited to these accelerated programs, which in this case, besides accounting, give a broad background in business and finance. “We have students from the most chassidish and most litvish communities, and everyone in between,” R’ Baumann says. “Both men and women from all kehillos join COPE and I think they do so well because they are so intent on taking their capabilities to the next level. We really change their lives.” Many people have never heard of a junior accounting program. Junior accounting is a certificate program whose graduates are skilled in accounting and business, and are able to work at a high level in a professional environment. COPE graduates have gone on to become bookkeepers, entrepreneurs, CFOs, and much more. “The beauty of the junior accounting program is the number of choices it gives to its graduates,” says R’ Baumann. One of those choices is becoming a CPA. Some twelve years ago COPE saw how many of its students were interested in learning more about finance, and had the skills and the drive to eventually sit for the CPA exams. To help those students, COPE created a 150 credit degree program which students can complete in 22 months. Upon graduation, the students are awarded a B.S. in Business with a concentration in accounting, and are eligible to sit for the CPA exams. These accelerated programs allow men and women who are seeking to provide for their families in a derech kavod to learn the skills they need to be competitive in the

Multiple Names and Halacha

(By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com) Professor Dalton Conley of NYU is a well-known sociologist and author. He named his son, “Yo Xing Heyno Augustus Eisner Alexander Weiser Knuckles” – reportedly the longest name in New York City’s official archives. It is a name that, had he been Jewish and had he posed the question to Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky Shlita, he would have been advised against against it. In Chassidish circles (and in many litvish circles too), multiple names are very much accepted. In many other circles, multiple names are discouraged. THE CHAZON ISH In the work entitled Pe’er HaDor about Rav Avrohom Yishayah Karelitz zt”l (1878-1953), author of the Chazon Ish (Vol. IV p. 200), it is brought down that he was very much against naming a child after two people.  He held that a  concatenation of two (or more names) is, in effect, a new name.  It thus has no benefit for the child, nor is it a fulfillment of Kivud Av v’Aim when the name of the one individual is not given.  He stated that the sheaf of Kedusha – the overflow of holiness that one receives when naming after a Tzaddik only come when the exact same name is used. OTHER POSKIM AS WELL Rav Moshe Shternbuch (Teshuvos v’Hanhagos Vol. I #608) Shlita cites the Chazon Ish not to name a child with two names.  This is also the view commonly attributed to Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky shlita.  Rav Ben Tzion Abba Shaul zt”l held that one should not name two names because of an entirely different reason:  There is a chance that one of the names will end up not being used and the child will incur damage on account of this. THE NODA BIYEHUDA AND CHASAM SOFER The Chazon Ish was not the first to express this idea of avoiding two names. The great acharon, Rav Yechezkel Landau (1713-1793), writes  (Noda BiYehudah MT OC  113) that nowhere in the Talmud do we find any Tanna or Amorah that was called by two names.  Therefore, he concludes, that there is no point in giving someone two names.  The same conclusion is made by Rabbi Moshe Sofer (1762-1839) in his responsa ( Shut Chasam Sofer EH #8). It seems that the name Yonasan Aryeh found in Yevamos 122b must either be understood as a form of a last name (such as Yehudah Maccabi) where the latter name is a family title indicating great strength.  Alternatively, it could be understood as, “Hashem has given a lion.”  Similarly the name Bas Sheva would be understood as one name – i.e. the seventh daughter. Professor Conley also named his daughter “E” – the shortest name in the New York City archives.  We do find, lehavdil a Tanna in Pirkei Avos that seems to have been named after a letter – in fact, twice.  In Pirkei Avos, Ben Hay Hay tells us “Lefum Tzaara Agra – according to the level of difficulty involved in observing a Mitzvah is the reward.” Most people focus on his message, but let’s take a moment to focus on the Rabbi’s name. DEBATE BETWEEN TORAH LISHMA AND TOSFOS Ben Hay Hay seems to be two names.   The Torah Lishma (Responsa #402) cites this very notion as a proof that one may even name someone after a

Rav Dov Landau & Rav Asher Deutsch Sign A Joint Letter Aas Agreement Reached In Modi’in Illit Shul

In a rare event, Rosh Yeshivas Slobodka HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau Shlita, the leader of the Degel Hatorah tzibur, and HaGaon HaRav Asher Deutsch Shlita, a Rosh Yeshiva in Ponevezh and leader of Peleg Yerushalmi, have penned a combined letter. According to the Kikar Shabbos report, the two were brought together by the mora d’asra of Modi’in Illit, HaGaon HaRav Meir Kessler Shlita. According to the report, the Shalhevet Simcha NGO established by the rav’s father, HaGaon Rav Simcha Kessler ZT”L, was at the heart of the storm after members of the organization began running the Yacheil Yisrael Shul in the city, but machlokes erupted as the rav and mispallalim align with Peleg Yerushalmi while the persons running the NGO are from the Degel mainstream litvish tzibur. The machlokes escalated until calls were heard to remove the shul. Rav Kessler finally became involved, initiating a solution whereby Peleg mispallalim would remain and run the shul under the watchful eye of the NGO, which is representative of the Degel faction. The plan was accepted and Rav Kesler committed to raise “millions” for the shul, with the report adding, Rav Kessler has begun fundraising and he called on Rav Deutsch to sign a letter for donors as well, leading to the joint letter with Rav Landau and Rav Deutsch towards raising funds for the shul. POLL: If Chareidim Unite In Elections, Deri Becomes Second Most Powerful Person In The Knesset

(PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) Efforts continue to create a united bloc that would include Shas, Yahadut Hatorah, Agudas Yisrael, Bnei Torah and Yachad, which would result in an unprecedented chareidi power base. Many if not most opine such a union will not occur, since the players will never agree to concede to one another as each player maneuvers to secure for his respective position of power and influence. While the chareidi union has not yet been established and efforts are only in the preliminary stages, the Smith Institute survey commissioned by parties that would make up the chareidi bloc examined the results of the mandates in the case of such a reality. This is an internal survey to assist the chareidi parties to decide if such a move is wise, and if so, what is the likely outcome. BeChadrei Chareidim has obtained the results of the survey, which shows the power of the chareidi factions will increase should they run as a single party. The survey, conducted by the Smith Institute for Research headed by Prof. Rafi Smith, examined the potential of chareidi street support for a united chareidi party. The biggest winner of the poll will be Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, who will head the second largest party in the Knesset and in the coalition. The survey examined three possibilities. A separate run by Shas and Yahadut Hatorah, a separate run with a split between Degel Hatorah and Agudas Yisrael, and the possibility of uniting all the parties into one list. The first option in the survey: Shas is not harmed at all as it retains the seven mandates it currently has with the support of 21% of the chareidi public (excluding the traditional-religious public). A United Yahadut Hatorah (Agudas Yisrael and Degel Hatorah) earns seven seats with 51% of the chareidi vote, also maintaining its strength, while Eli Yishai’s Yachad party does not make the minimum threshold, with only 3% of the chareidi public voting for him. The second option in the survey: Splitting Yahadut Hatorah – Degel Hatorah headed by MK Moshe Gafni wins four to five seats with 30 percent, while Agudas Yisrael headed by MK Yaakov Litzman, wins three to four seats and does not meet the minimum threshold to enter Knesset, with a 23% support rate. According to this scenario, oddly enough Shas voters go to the Ashkenazi factions – 11% to Degel Hatorah and 4% to Agudas Yisrael. In the case of chareidi unity on one list, the chareidi public in the Knesset will rise by two Knesset seats before the election campaign when Deri will head it, and become the strongest figure in the political system, with the second largest faction in the Knesset. The survey was conducted as a telephone survey conducted on January 8, 2010 among 420 people as a representative sample of the chareidi population in Israel, nationwide. Distribution of interviewees according to the streams: Litvish 33%; Chassidim 30%; Sephardi 25%; Peleg Yerushalmi 3%; Chardal (Chareidi Dati Leumi) 5%, and other 4%. To date, Shas has not only failed to express enthusiasm over the unity plan, HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen, head of the Shas Moetzas Chachmei HaTorah, has spoken out against it, fearing all the years of work by HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L to return the Sephardi identity

Knesset Committee Approves Request To Split Yahadut Hatorah

The achdus in Yahadut Hatorah between the litvish Degel Hatorah party and the chassidish Agudas Yisrael party is now officially history, as the Knesset House Committee on Wednesday morning, January 9, 2019, approved a request to split the parties. The fact that they put differences aside and ran together earned the combined list at least one additional seat in the 20th Knesset, and if they do not run together in the upcoming race, which they still can, it will undoubtedly claim a price in the number of seats they receive. In fact, according to some polls, if they do opt to run independent of one another, there is a chance one or both parties might not pass the 3.25% minimum election threshold to enter Knesset. Should this be the case, it would have a profound impact on life for the chareidi tzibur in Israel during the coming years as their representation in Knesset would be significantly diminished. Speaking officially however, “The request is submitted with the agreement of the two parties in accordance with the agreement that was set between them even before the elections for the 21st Knesset and is requested for procedural reasons only,” the statement read. The petition was signed by MK Menachem Eliezer Moses, chairman of Yahadut Hatorah. Moses will not be continuing in the 21st Knesset, as was reported, as the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita has tapped Yanki Tessler to replace him. Tessler is a former advisor to Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman. BeChadrei Chareidim adds, that it should be noted that although this is a technical procedure that will add money to the campaign and divide the work in the party into two, negotiations between the parties at this stage are not progressing as there is bitterness between the factions following the lack of harmony that accompanied the municipal elections. BeChadrei Chareidim also report that Agudas Yisrael’s Committee of Eight, the leadership committee of the party, reported to party Secretary Chanoch Zeibert regarding Degel Hatorah’s proposal to Agudas Yisrael that they would sign an agreement for two terms that states the senior and junior positions held would be alternated between the parties, with Degel taking the senior positions in the first of the two terms of the agreement. Yahadut Hatorah is stressing the split is not machlokes-related, but the request to split the factions by the Knesset Committee is “a well-known procedural move coordinated between the factions, without any significance for the way they run in the upcoming elections”. Agudas Yisrael’s Yaakov Litzman initially refuted the report of the requested split, but the move has been confirmed by the Knesset spokesman, Shimon Malka. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Degel Representatives Meet With Lelover Rebbe Over Beit Shemesh Coalition Concerns

A group of litvish avreichim met on Tuesday night with the Lelover Rebbe in Beit Shemesh in an effort to explain the position of Degel Hatorah, which at present, refuses to join the Beit Shemesh coalition headed by Mayor Aliza Bloch. The rebbe is the rav of Shimon Goldberg of Shlomei Emunim, who has received instructions to enter the coalition. According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, the avreichim spoke with the rebbe for an hour, reviewing the details of the agreement which Mayor Bloch signed with the Bayit Yehudi party, explaining this agreement is the reason both Degel and Shas refuse to enter the coalition. The rebbe reportedly told them that he received a report from Goldberg which was the opposite of what they told him and in the coming days, he will probe the matter in depth. It is also reported that Goldberg appeared during the meeting and an argument resulted as he insists, he was promised the religious status quo will be observed in this administration while Degel Hatorah seems to indicate this is not so. Possible Solution To Ongoing Rift In Yahadut Hatorah As Machlokes Surrounding The Draft Bill Continues

With the need to pass a new draft bill a pressing reality, the machlokes between the litvish Degel Hatorah and chassidish Agudas Yisrael factions of Yahadut Hatorah continues, perhaps gaining in its ferocity. MK (Agudas Yisrael) Yisrael Eichler has put forward a plan, which he hopes can bring the sides back together. It would require the efforts of the secretaries of the respective Moetzas of Degel and Agudah, working with a third person to be selected by the Moetzas Chachmei HaTorah of Shas. According to a BeChadrei Chareidim report, it has already been decided that a representative of Degel will speak with secretary Avraham Rubinstein and chairman of the Agudah faction in Knesset, MK Menachem Eliezer Moses, will speak with secretary Yaakov Waltzer, and simultaneously, there will be coordination with Shas. The heart of the machlokes surrounding the draft law is that both Shas and Degel Hatorah wish to pass a draft law before the expiration date set by the High Court of Justice, which last week granted a 45-day extension to the expiration date, while Agudas Yisrael wishes to wait until there is a coalition with a large majority, which means after Knesset elections. YWN-Israel reported that rabbonim and MKs of Degel Hatorah met on motzei Shabbos with HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky and HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein, seeking urgent direction. The following day, on Sunday, 1 Teves, Gafne informed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that if a draft law is not legislated, Degel will not remain in the coalition. This would compel early elections as the coalition currently has a one-seat majority. Alternatively, Agudas Yisrael does not appear to have changed its position since the Moetzas Gedolei Torah met several months ago, deciding that if the current version of the draft law is advanced, it will pull from the coalition, having the same result, early elections. Shas sides with Degel Hatorah, explaining there is wiggle room to make some changes in the current bill, citing passing the current bill is better than taking a chance on the High Court deciding the fate of the bnei Torah. In addition, Shas and Degel Hatorah both feel in all likelihood, the next coalition government will be less chareidi-friendly so the time to pass a favorable draft bill is now. Their biggest fear is that if the Knesset is dissolved and early elections declared, the High Court may decide to unilaterally adjudicate the matter and the outcome will most likely not be a favorable one for the tens of thousands of lomdei Torah. Bnei Brak: Peleg Claims Of Discrimination Because Of Planned Removal Of Illegal Shul Are Baseless

Members of the Peleg Yerushalmi are preparing to evacuate the Darchei Shmuel Shul in Kiryat Herzog, Bnei Brak, as the city has ordered removing it since it is an illegal structure. A hachnasas Sefer Torah was recently held in the shul and efforts to prevent it from being destroyed have been unsuccessful as City Hall reports the building is illegal. According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, claims by members of the Peleg that they are being discriminated against are unfounded, quoting unnamed city officials who are speaking out for a first time, who point out that during the recent election campaign for the municipal elections, no less than eight illegal shuls were established in the Torah City, all using public land intended for parks and the benefit of the tzibur, and Darchei Shmuel is among the eight. Newly-elected mayor Avraham Rubinstein in quoted telling Kikar Shabbos, “They simply stole public land, plain and simple, with the backing of rabbonim – there are eight shuls that are built on stolen green areas and they all will be removed”. Kikar also quotes city officials saying, “Until now, four of the shuls have been removed, including Klall Chassidi, one Sephardi, one Litvish affiliated with Degel Hatorah, and now, we are preparing to remove the other four. Clearly, we are removing all of the illegal shuls and not removing shuls based on affiliation. We are removing all of them since they are illegal”. The report adds that persons close to the mayor explain he has made it clear, that his administration will not tolerate an atmosphere of ‘hefker’ with people believing they can do as they please for as long as it involves a shul. He will not tolerate persons taking the law into their own hands. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Fascinating Article On The Radoshitzer Rebbe Published In This Week’s Mishpacha Magazine

By Dovid Sussman He’s the busy leader of a chassidus, but somehow his day stretches along with his devotion. Rav Aharon Yosef Horonchik, the Radoshitzer Rebbe, is also the guardian angel for hundreds of couples going through their own challenging journeys to parenthood. He’s their emotional support and medical advisor, but most of all, he’s their rock of faith It’s close to midnight on a Motzaei Shabbos, but the exuberant dancing in the hotel ballroom shows no sign of abating. Lively music is pumped through the loudspeakers as a large group of men join hands in a circle, together with the Rebbe of Radoshitz, Rav Aharon Yosef Horonchik. The men in the room, a cross-section of Orthodox Jewry — chassidim, Litvaks, and Sephardim alike, are a circle of love and support, while on the other side of the mechitzah, their wives are soaking up the emotional fervor and inspiration of the evening. And for a short time, these men and women can forget the pain, the anguish, and the echoing emptiness that are their constant companions. This Melaveh Malkah is the climax of every Shabbos retreat run by the Radoshitzer Rebbe through his organization Magdil Yeshuos, where couples can enjoy a short respite from the challenges of childlessness that are a constant shadow to their lives. And for these couples, there is no one who understands them like the Rebbe and the Rebbetzin. For the first thirteen years of their own marriage, they were in the same place. The Rebbe’s spartan headquarters on a quiet side street just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Jerusalem’s Central Bus Station is adjacent to the Radoshitzer beis medrash, a facility of equally modest size. From this tiny room, Rebbe Aharon Yosef and Rebbetzin Shifra Horonchik preside over an organization that has assisted countless couples struggling with infertility, offering them practical guidance and emotional support. They are in constant contact with about 500 couples still waiting to be blessed with children – in addition to the many who have already benefited from their assistance in receiving their long-awaited salvations. The Radoshitzer Rebbe – father figure, faithful friend, sagacious guide and a loyal confidant – is as unpretentious as his office. He wears the glossy beketshe of a chassidish rebbe, but his unassuming manner can make you forget you’re talking to a distinguished sage. He’s affable, down to earth, focused, and incredibly energetic – especially impressive considering he subsists on an unfathomably small amount of sleep. It’s the Rebbetzin, her husband’s partner and most enthusiastic advocate, who helps fill out the picture of this unpretentious chesed machine. They are a team, a sort of power couple on a holy mission, and the Rebbetzin emphasizes that the Rebbe spends many days traveling around the world to drum up funding for his organization. The Rebbe interjects, “Everything that the Rebbetzin says about me is true many times over for her. There’s nothing that gives her more simchah than being able to help another childless couple.” Chesed Inheritance The chassidus of Radoshitz was founded in Poland in the nineteenth century by Rav Yissachar Ber of Radoshitz, a towering spiritual giant who was famed, among other things, for his supernatural feats. The community was almost entirely wiped out in the Holocaust, but it was resurrected in

Revenge Of Agudas Yisrael – No Degel Deputy Mayor In Betar Illit

Agudas Yisrael’s revenge against Degel Hatorah is playing out in Betar Illit, as the litvish party will not be receiving a deputy mayoral position as promised. This is the chassidish party’s way of getting back after announcing former Beit Shemesh Mayor Moshe Abutbul is not resigning to permit Agudas’ Avraham Nachman Frankel to become a deputy mayor in Beit Shemesh. Agudas Yisrael accuses Degel Hatorah of failing to abide by the agreement signed by which Moshe Abutbul will resign to permit the ninth person on the list to enter the coalition and become a deputy mayor, referring to Agudas Yisrael’s Avraham Nachman Frankel. In a media interview, Agudah’s Shimon Goldberg used terms like “Shveiras HaKeilim” and stated, “There is no one to trust”, as he accused Degel of failing to abide by the agreement. Degel’s Moshe Muntag visited HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita with Abutbul, and the Torah giant instructed Abutbul to remain and not resign as planned. Hence, Abutbul retracted his letter of resignation and will continue serving on the city council. As a result, Frankel will remain outside. That being the case, Agudas Yisrael decided it will block Degel’s Dudi Zlatz (זלץ) from becoming a deputy mayor in Betar Illit. Degel boycotted the festive meeting of the incoming administration in Betar in response to Agudah’s retaliatory move. In the Wednesday edition of the HaMevaser newspaper, affiliated with Shlomei Emunim, it presents an extensively detailed analysis of the election in Beit Shemesh, rejecting accusations from Degel Hatorah, that Agudas Yisrael members, which include Shlomei Emunim, voted for Mayor Aliza Bloch and not Abutbul, and that is why she lost and why Rav Kanievsky instructed Abutbul not to resign. The newspaper however breaks down the voting by neighborhood and insists it is clear that Agudas Yisrael voters did back Abutbul, and he lost to Bloch because of other factors, not due to the voting of backers of Agudas Yisrael as claimed by Degel leaders. Shlomei Emunim: Regarding Beit Shemesh, Its “Shveiras HaKeilim & There Is No One To Trust”

A representative of Shlomei Emunim speaks of the current situation, using the term ‘Shveiras HaKeilim’ and the fact “There is no one to trust” in his eyes. In addition, the machlokes continues between the factions of Yahadut Hatorah in Beit Shemesh. Shlomei Emunim’s Shimon Goldberg spoke with BeChadrei Chareidim regarding the situation in Beit Shemesh and adhering to agreements that were signed before elections, in particular the agreement by which former mayor of Beit Shemesh Moshe Abutbul was going to resign to permit the ninth person on the ticket, Shimon Goldberg, to enter the city council in his place. Goldberg explained his anger during an interview with BeChadrei, lashing out at both Abutbul and the Degel Hatorah faction of the Yahadut Hatorah party following two days of turmoil which began with rabbonim announcing it is absolutely forbidden to enter the coalition being assembled by the city’s new mayor, Dr. Aliza Bloch. HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita is quoted leading this opposition, in addition to instructing former mayor Moshe Abutbul not to resign but to remain in the city council despite the agreement reached with Shlomei Emunim. In the interview with BeChadrei, Goldberg, who was expected to serve as a deputy mayor in the city, lashed out at Abutbul and his decision not to resign, which prevents Goldberg’s entry into the coalition. “I hope that in the end everyone will be in the coalition. I very much hope that people will come to their senses and return the favor and behave like public figures should act, especially as our rabbonim do, so that they will not force us to do something contrary,” says Goldberg. Goldberg continued and shifted to an attack against Abutbul, who announced he will not be resigning to permit Goldberg to enter the coalition as he promised he would do. Goldberg believes that chareidi politics is based on agreements and understandings, and in this case, Abutbul’s behavior is not acceptable and will result in ramifications in numerous areas. Regarding allegations that Agudas Yisrael’s decision in Beit Shemesh not to vote on Election Day resulted in Bloch’s election, Goldberg stated these allegations are simply lies, baseless and nothing more of less than non-truths. He explained that he personally did his utmost to get Abutbul reelected, as was the policy of Agudas Yisrael in that city’s election. He denies Agudas Yisrael did not vote for Abutbul, adding Abutbul is required to adhere to the agreement despite current realities, adding that the only reason Degel Hatorah remains in opposition is because there are portfolios still available and the litvish faction is working to get the best deal it can. Goldberg continues slamming Degel, explaining “When Degel Hatorah entered the coalition ten years ago, it did it without us. When it closed [a deal prior to elections with] with Moshe Abutbul, it did so without us. None of them made sure to protect positions for us so we don’t have to worry about them. It cannot be one-sided, achdus when it fits them.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

PHOTOS: President Rivlin Lights Chanukah Candles With Chareidi Soldiers

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin lit Chanukah candles for the first night of Chanukah with IDF combat soldiers from various Charedi units. Among those present were soldiers from Tomer in Givati, Chetz in the Paratroopers and Netzach Yehuda of Kfir. Currently in the IDF, some 7,400 Chareidi soldiers serve their country in various positions including combat soldiers, officers, career soldiers and many other roles. In the past decade the amount of Chareidi soldiers serving in the military has multiplied by a factor of 10.5. Some of the soldiers told their own personal stories of how they came to serve during the Chanukah event. Rivlin told the soldiers: “I see you, and I see the Chashmonaim of our own era. Soldiers, warriors, Tzaddikim and Oskei Torah, this is the truest sense of the meaning of the Al Ha-Nissim prayer. You are an inspiration, proving we can find the balance between protecting the country and protecting what is most important to us. I am also taken aback by the internal diversity here among you. We have representation here from the Chassidic community, the Litvish community, and Sephardi and eastern Charedim as well. You represent well the entire spectrum of the Charedi community. I want to tell you all how much of a deep pride I feel for the dedication and sacrifices you have made for the security of the State of Israel. Your services applies in all aspects of your life. You are a unifying bridge that brings the people of Israel together. You are not breaking down walls or fences, but paving a new path.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Mrs. Adina Bar-Shalom: Deri Has Changed – He Is Not The Same Man

Rebitzen Adina Bar-Shalom, a daughter of Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L, told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) on Thursday, that Shas party chairman, Minister Aryeh Deri has changed. She said, “Perhaps, call me naïve, but the truth is that many trusted and believed that Aryeh Deri would continue on his derech. My father also believed in him but Aryeh changed. He is not the same Aryeh that he was once upon a time. He changed totally and opted for a different path”. In the last Knesset elections, Bar-Shalom openly backed Shas, even to the extent of holding a joint press conference with Deri. Bar-Shalom confirmed her plans to run in the upcoming Knesset elections, explaining her decision to go with a new party. The official announcement was made this past summer. She told Galei Tzahal she plans to be “the man in a place where there is no man. I want to undertake the commitment to implement change in my society.” When she was asked to explain just how Deri changed, Bar-Shalom responded, “Aryeh has taken a path towards the Litvish direction”. She clarified: “You see him – you remember him the way he was 15 years ago, and I ask you if this is the same Aryeh? We all heard and they spoke about it in the street, that he can become prime minister, he was clever, has wisdom, united the people, but I am not here to praise him, he is not the same Aryeh. He has taken an entirely different path and I remain in my same place that my father educated me, the place of doing, and I believe he would give me a bracha today on the path I have chosen”. Gafne Demands Majority on Joint List to Continue Partnering With Agudas Yisrael

Degel Hatorah chairman MK Moshe Gafne explains his party is willing to run together with Agudas Yisrael in the next Knesset election providing Agudah is willing to cut the number of representatives it currently holds so that the majority of in Yahadut Hatorah would rest with Degel and not Agudah, as it has been until now. At present, Degel MKs are Gafne, Uri Maklev and Yaakov Asher. Agudas Yisrael on the other hand has four MKs, Meir Porush, Yaakov Litzman, Yisrael Eichler and Menachem Eliezer Moses. Gafne feels that today, in light of Degel’s victories in Jerusalem and elsewhere, Agudas Yisrael is no longer entitled to have the majority representation in the combined party, but now, it must shift from the chassidim to the litvish camp. Speaking with Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), Gafne explained this is what must occur if Agudas Yisrael wishes to run together again under the joint Yahadut Hatorah banner. He explains how Degel ran without Agudah in Yerushalayim and received six mandates on the city council. Regarding speculation that Degel will run with Shas, Gafne explained earlier in the week that while he favors achdus, Shas receives votes from a broad constituency and joining with Degel might jeopardize this and both are unwilling to create such a reality. Going back to the party’s future with Agudas Yisrael, he remains adamant that the only way they can run together is if Degel has the majority, citing Degel has proven itself in other areas too, including Petach Tikvah and Ashdod, where the party doubled itself. Hence, he is willing to continue running under the joint banner, but the division of seats will have to change, so the ball remains in Agudas’ court to decide if such a reality is acceptable. The “Chassidus Fair” Grand Revolution Continues To Expand!

In recent years, the number of people seeking to study Chassidus is consistently growing and expanding in the entire world. The immense treasure that began to develop more than 300 years ago, and for many years was available only to Chassidim, today has become a “must-have item” in every Jewish home. Today, one must not belong to any specific “Chasidic sect” in order to learn the teachings of Chassidus. Concepts such as “service of G-d”, “love and awe of G-d”, “faculties of the soul” etc. are common language among various yeshiva high school students, students in Litvishe yeshivos, and in girls’ high schools and seminaries.   One indication of this major Chassidus revolution is without a doubt the annual 19 Kislev Grand Chassidus Fair. Since its inception eight years ago, every year ‘Binyanei Hauma’, the largest convention center in the heart of Jerusalem, is converted into a round-the-clock “Chassidic universe” for an entire week. With Victories In Hand, Degel Will Be Flexing Its Political Muscle Against Agudas Yisroel

With a number of victories in hand, according to most political analysts, Degel Hatorah is now likely to inform Agudas Yisrael that the tables have turned, and now; it will hold 60% of the joint Yahadut Hatorah pie and Agudas Yisrael will only hold onto 40%. In the past, the situation was reversed, as the chassidim maintained they are the majority. It’s now a litvish ballgame. Many are offended by these categorizations, but reality is what it is, and the parties are separate, and in this case, they opposed one another. Following this election, in the Jerusalem city council for example, Degel has six seats and Agudas Yisrael only three. Degel Hatorah’s candidate in Jerusalem, Moshe Leon, beat out Agudas Yisrael’s Yossi Deutsch, and Leon is now facing off against secular candidate Ofer Berkowitz. While the polls predict a tight race, Degel officials are exhibiting confidence. That said, if they do not receive the support of the chassidim, Agudas Yisrael, Berkowitz may take the race. It will be interesting to see how the chassidim act vis-à-vis the runoff election. Most predict that despite the fact that Leon is Shomer Shabbat and Berkowitz is not, Deputy Minister Yaakov Litzman, the Gerrer Rebbe’s man in Knesset, will not support him, but will announce he is voting for Berkowitz, or alternatively, will recommend to the Gerrer Rebbe Shlita that chassidim refrain from voting in the race. This occurred back in the race when Nir Barkat was elected for his first term. Litzman would not back a fellow Agudas Yisrael candidate, now Deputy Minister Meir Porush, his political nemesis, and refrained from backing anyone, opening the door for Nir Barkat. This time, it may be Berkowitz instead of Barkat. MK Menachem Eliezer Moses however, who is the Vishnitzer Rebbe’s representative in Knesset and chairman of Agudas Yisrael, announced on Wednesday morning that he will suggest to Agudas Yisrael’s Moetzas Gedolei Torah that they back Leon in the race. Moses insists it is time to push party politics aside and look at the big picture, which demands achdus, adding that this is imperative ahead of Knesset elections in 2019. He reminds the tzibur that if the chareidim would have remained united, there would not be a runoff election, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Aryeh King, who endorsed Deutsch in the mayoral race, and whose party received two seats in the Jerusalem Council announced it should be clear to all, that in the runoff, Leon is the man. In the elections, King, who is Shomer Shabbat as well, insists the religious voting public must vote for Leon. Echoing King’s message is Agriculture Minister (Bayit Yehudi) Uri Ariel, who heads the Ichud Leumi faction, announcing his faction endorses Leon in the Jerusalem runoff election. Following a race in which the Degel Hatorah and Shas backed a dati leumi candidate and not the chassidish one, it is clear it is more about party wish lists than what is good for the holy city and it remains to be seen who will emerge the victor on 5 Kislev, Tuesday, November 13th, when the runoff election takes place. ISRAEL ELECTIONS: Jerusalem Mayoral Race Heading to Runoff, Beit Shemesh Too Close To Call; Results From Around The Country

Following are some of the results from the municipal elections in Israel. Second or runoff elections will take place in many municipalities and cities on Tuesday, 5 Kislev, as none of the candidates in these locations received the minimum required; 40% of the vote. The list includes: Arrarah, Ashkelon Coast Council, Gush Etzion, Har Hebron, Hod Hasharon, Ilut, Jerusalem, Kara, Kiryat Tivon, Lakiya, Lower Galil, Metar, Mishad, Pardes Chana, Ra’anana, Ramat Gan, Tzefas, Yahud, Zarziz Council, and the Zevulun Council. In this election, the candidate with most votes is declared the winner. Yerushalayim: It is final and there are no winners declared in the Jerusalem mayoral race, but there are two contenders set to face off against one another in a runoff election on Tuesday, 5 Kislev. The Likud candidate, Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, Ze’ev Elkin was surprised to learn he is not in the runoff, coming in third place with only 19% despite being officially endorsed by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Moshe Leon received over 79,000 votes, which is 33%. A minimum of 40% is required to be declared a winner. Hence, he will face off against Ofer Berkowitz, who received about 68,000 votes, amounting to 29%. Elkin received about 47,000 votes (19%) and Yossi Deutsch 40,000 votes (17%). If we look at the Jerusalem city council, Degel Hatorah doubled its size and will have six seats in the new administration. Ofer Berkowitz’s Hisorarus party has six seats, Shas 5, Agudas Yisrael 3, Meretz 2, Elkin’s list 2, Bayit Yehudi 2, Aryeh King’s list 2, Bnei Torah (Peleg) 1, Yossi Chavilov 1 and Likud 1. The runoff election is scheduled for Tuesday, 5 Kislev, and it will not be a national holiday. Voter turnout was around 35%, a decrease from the election five years ago. Experts say in the runoff, the voter turnout is usually lower then on Election Day. Facing hundreds of his chassidic supporters, Deutsch during the night admitted defeat, lamenting the fact that if Shas and Degel Hatorah would have backed him, the capital of the State of Israel would be waking up to a new reality, a chareidi mayor. [VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Gedolim & Politicans Voting on Election Day Around Israel] Other major cities: Haifa: The Labor party candidate, Einat Kalish-Rotem, succeeded in unseating the veteran mayor, Yona Yahav. She enjoyed the backing of Degel Hatorah and Shas. She received 55.5% of the vote and Yahav only 37.7%. Kalish will become the first female mayor of one of the nation’s major cities. Voter turnout in the city was 45.37%. As reported earlier on YWN, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita predicted that Yahav, “the “Rasha” mayor would lose that race. Tel Aviv: In Tel Aviv, the incumbent, Ron Huldai, remains in office after receiving 46% of the vote with his opponent, Assaf Zamir, receiving only 35%. Chareidi municipalities and cities: Elad: It began with the High Court of Justice disqualifying the Degel Hatorah/Shas candidate in the Elad mayoral race, Yitzchak Pindrus. Both Shas and Degel Hatorah tried to postpone the election in the city in the hope of finding a new suitable candidate, but the court would not hear of it. This left them backing Barak Tzabari, who never dreamed of becoming the Shas candidate, and he received a respective 44%, but it was not enough. Mayor Yisrael Porush

Pindrus Turns To Mayor Porush To Sign Petition To Postpone Elad Elections Yitzchak Pindrus, whose candidacy in the Elad mayoral elections was disqualified by the courts, turned to Mayor Yisrael Porush in a letter, asking him to sign the petition to postpone elections in the city to permit fair elections. “I heard what you said yesterday, as well as your father, Deputy Minister Meir Porush, expressing adamant opposition to the legal petition, as well as expressing sorrow over my candidacy being disqualified, depriving me of the possibility to run for mayor of Elad in line with the instruction and decision of Rabbanei Gedolei Hador Shlita,” said Pindrus in his letter. The full story was covered in Tuesday’s HaMevaser and Hamodia, as well as in other media, quoting Porush expressing sorrow over the court’s decision. Pindrus cites how thousands of supporters are now seeking to postpone elections to permit Degel Hatorah to have a candidate, calling on both Mayor and Deputy Mayor Porush to sign the petition, to join the call to delay elections in Elad. The upcoming municipal elections in Elad remains in the news as supporters of Yitzchak Pindrus, who has been disqualified from running for the city’s mayor, are now seeking to postpone the elections in the city until such time they can find another candidate to oppose Mayor Yisrael Porush, who seeks reelection. The High Court of Justice on Monday rejected a petition which Degel Hatorah and Shas hoped would reverse the lower court, and permit Pindrus to run. However, this did not occur and now, both Degel and Shas are left without a candidate in that city’s elections. The residents backing Pindrus, numbering in the thousands, are turning to the Interior Ministry to use its authority to postpone elections in Elad to permit Degel Hatorah to get a new candidate. Pindrus opponents are uncomfortable with this as the Interior Minister, Aryeh Deri, happens to be the chairman of Shas. Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit on Tuesday told the cabinet there is no legal reason that the authority for this decision cannot be placed in the hands of another minister. On Monday, not long following the High Court decision, prominent attorney Tzvi Agmon, filed a letter calling to postpone the elections in Elad as explained above. He cited a case from 2003, in which the High Court of Justice approved delaying an election, adding the same should be the case in Elad today. Bayit Yehudi chairman in Elad, Councilman Shai Natan, has already expressed strong objections against delaying elections in Elad. He sent his own letter via yet another prominent attorney, Aviad HaKohen, calling on Attorney General Mandelblit and Interior Minister Deri to have elections in Elad

DEGEL VS AGUDAH: We Will No Longer Make Do With The ‘Crumbs’ We Receive In Yerushalayim [VIDEO]

In the beginning of the attached video, we see Deputy Education Minister Meir Porush speaking at an assembly, warning that Degel Hatorah cannot receive more than them, the chassidish Agudas Yisrael party, as Agudah insists they have more voters and a larger tzibur in Jerusalem. Degel Hatorah on the other hand, representing the ashkenazi litvish tzibur in Yerushalayim, insists it is larger and as such, it will not longer make do with accepting the “crumbs” given to it by Agudas Yisrael. In the second video, we see only Moshe Gafne, who promises the party will no longer accept the fact that Agudas Yisrael is the majority and Degel Hatorah the minority, speaking of the Degel hashkafa and following the path that was laid out by the rabbonim shlita, Gedolei Torah, and this is the path that will be followed with pride. Clearly, the rift between the chassidish and litvish factions of the Yahadut Hatorah party has resulted in the split in the upcoming municipal elections around Israel, scheduled for Tuesday, 21 Marcheshvan. The factions are backing opposing candidates in a number of races, including Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh, Elad and Haifa. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem/Photo Credit: קבוצת רוטרניק)

Rosh Yeshivas Beis Medrash Elyon Warns Bochrim Not to Damage Peleg Election Ads

There are fears of violence in litvish yeshivos during the days ahead of elections between the Degel Hatorah and Peleg Yerushalmi factions. As this has been the case almost every night recently in areas including Bnei Brak, Beit Shemesh and in Yerushalayim. Roshei Yeshivos and mashgichim are becoming involved towards preventing violence between talmidim, not just physical but also verbal violence. In Yeshiva Beis Medrash Elyon in Bnei Brak, Mashgiach HaGaon HaRav S. Shulman placed a notice on the bulletin board that it is forbidden to damage election ads from ‘Eitz’ (עץ), the Bnei Torah Party, which is the Peleg Yerushalmi. The Rosh Yeshiva stated it is absolutely forbidden to damage Peleg election posters in home and shuls and anyone not adhering to this, will be immediately expelled from the yeshiva. There are also fears that members of the Peleg will be filing police complaints over the damage that has already occurred, and this may lead to the arrest of bochrim. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)
