Explanation Demanded of Police for Arrest of Amram Shapira

The daily HaMevaser reports today, that askanim are pressuring Jerusalem police to provide a plausible explanation for the arrest earlier in the week of Eida Gavaad gabbai Rav Amram Shapira along with others allegedly tied to a tax evasion money laundering operating under the umbrella of the Eida Chareidit’s Vaad Artzi tzedaka organization.

Following the arrest, Gavaad HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Tuvia Weiss Shlita released a statement that Rav Shapira “is pure and he is innocent. There was no cause to arrest him. They don’t want him but they want me. Let them come and get me then”.

Shapira has been released while the other defendants in the case were remanded. During the remand hearing, the court had harsh words for police, seemingly perplexed as to why Shapira was arrested since none of the evidence links him to any alleged criminal activities.

HaMevaser reports that Rav Shapira is a known public figure and it was quite obvious to all that he is not a flight risk and if police wished to speak with him such a meeting could be arranged. The rabbonim and askanim reject any attempt to justify Shapira’s arrest. The report does not mention names of the “rabbonim” and “askanim” involved.

  1. “the Eida Chareidit’s Vaad Artzi tzedaka organization” is misleading. Vaad haArtzi is not part of the Eida Chareidit. It is an independent organization.

  2. Halacha demands that the law of the land must be observed. How these people condone tax evasion and money laundering is a mystery to me. It is a Chilul Hashem and they have no shame. Perhaps someone can explain how they justify such illegal behavior.

  3. This does not change anything regarding the hilul hashem. It remains still very active and we shouldn’t stop it. The only question is whom to blame for it the chariedim the victims or someone else?

  4. Dmmd have you read the court protocol??
The guys never harmed a fly, isn’t involved with anything illegal yes was arrested by police for nothing!
The police used wiretaps to listen to his phone, arrested him and released him, so what exactly r u talking about???

You don’t get it! We have soo many amongst us who are yearning to bash us, that they won’t even read the article. He doesn’t accept that a haredi might be innocent! Chillul hashem is when you stab your brother in the back when he’s been wronged. There is an old story of 2 people who were fighting in court with each claiming to be the guilty one and the one going to jail. when the judge heard them argue that their friend should be released and he’s ready to be incarcerated for it, he said, “this is what a g-dly nation is all about! I want to be a part of this beautiful nation”. When we are the first ones to bash our brethren without any proof, or even when the court has found someone innocent, that’s a chillul hashem! thats where the opposite of achdus creates a huge chillul hashem, incites anti semitism etc. (i hope it will not go any further ha–em yerachem v’yishmor!)

  6. to barlev. Please let me know where I can read the court’s protocol that says that he was released because he did not do anything illegal.

  7. To Barlev. 3 days since I asked you for evidence that the culprit was exonerated as you asserted. You did not answer. Is that an admission that what you wrote is false ie that he has been found not guilty?
