R’ Yisrael Salanter (see Ohr Yisrael Iggeres 27) talks about the importance of both broad bekius and knowing how to be ????? ????? but again he doesn’t say that you should engage in such dialectics without a broad knowledge base. In fact although he does not directly discuss which one takes precedence, he does list bekius first which in turn is based on the fact that the Gemara in kiddushin lists ???? ?? ??? ???? (bekius) before ???? ?????? (pilpul/charifus).
