I once asked a chassidish relative of mine about this custom. She said that in the olden days, women didn’t drive wagons, so too women shouldn’t drive cars. I asked her why it’s wrong for women to drive wagons/cars and she said that a woman’s place is at home, it’s not tzanuah for her to be driving.

I don’t really get the whole concept, but whatever.
