Just because there are people who subjectively believe slits to be flashy, does not make them right. There are people who think the color purple is flashy. And maybe women should not wear gold jewelry — that is WAY more flashy and attention getting. Oh wait, the women of dor hamidbar ( a higher madreiga than any of us will ever reachg, I am taught) all wore gold jewelry, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, NOSE rings (imagine a bas Yisroel doing that today!), and we know taht because they were lauded for not wanting to give up their jewelry for the aigel hazahav.
