Where suicide is illegal it is only because of religious law, i.e. religious Christians passed a law prohibiting suicide due to their moral leanings. There were punishments in certain societies for violating this law. The legality of suicide also has ramifications that apply to those who assist in a suicide.
In the morally corrupt US, suicide is only illegal in a few states and even there it is only a formality.
