Prior to pasteurization people often came down with various diseases from drinkng milk. The improvement in food processing are the reason that the life expectancy has increased from under 40 to over 70 (other factors have been the improvement in drugs, surgery and hygiene in general – pasteurization being part of the improvement in hygiene).
