It would be libelous to call CTLawyer a “criminal,” because he/she is not a public figure. But I believe that persons in the public arena – particularly candidates for high political office – are not entitled to the same protections under the libel laws as CTLawyer, Health and me. And the libel laws are generally not criminal laws, so jail is not a punishment for committing libel. Calling Hillary a criminal, or calling Dopie Donnie a fraud, are not actionable under the laws of defamation because of their status as public figures.
