There is a difference between unappreciative and abusive. Some of the people who need your help the most won’t seem to appreciate it. They may seem to take it for granted because they have always been supported by others. They may be sarcastic out of pure habit. Some people who are hurt lash out of other people. If it’s not actually hurting you, you can help people who need help even if they are not pleasant to be around.
But if their words or actions are doing real damage, you need to take a step back. Protect yourself if the recipient is actually abusive.
