I’d recommend against Catan (both as a first “modern” game and in general).
I can try to recommend something if you tell me how many players you’ll
probably have and their ages.
(Do you specifically want a game that’s not competitive, whether because
it’s cooperative or because it’s just too random to be taken seriously?)
