Ultimately what is missing from this discussion is what going to public school shows. When frum people were sending their children to public school, they left Yiddishkeit in droves. It shows that public school had/has a detrimental effect on whether someone will choose to remain frum. The fact that several gedolim and Rabbonim went to public school and still became great tzaddikim is eidus to their greatness.
