The IRS has said that there could be lengthy delays in issuing refunds this year due to both physical limitations resulting from most of its Staff working remotely under Federal covid restrictions and the huge increase in workload resulting from distribution of two rounds of relief checks enacted by Congress. They are giving priority to the emergency covid relief checks and processing normal refunds as fast as they can. In congressional testimony 2 weeks ago, the IRS acknowledged there were still millions of pending refunds from the 2019 tax year and the backlog is growing. They also said that fewer than 5 percent of telephone inquiries were being answered. I found the automated online inquiry system on the IRS website to be of little help in getting actual status information.
