You’re all right that we can learn from everyone, but one of the signs of a chacham in pirkei avos is “chacham eino medaber lifnei gadol mimenu bechachma o beminyan”, so perhaps it was not apropriate of you to be giving advice to someone older than you if she did not ask you.
