aob- This is rather complicated not knowing what CB means by a self centered kid, I think there is a whole spectrum of Self Centered Children from very young to Adolescence. Maybe it depends on how self absorbed he or she is, whether they can learn to empathize with another person. Some children are born with this Middot, and some children do not understand about verbal and other kind of Social Cues so for them it would be like learning a completely new language. Then I think there are other children no matter how much love and attention are shown to them, they are almost like a bottomless pit it is never enough. The last group sadly can become very controlling and demanding.
