Five years in kollel now is considered “short term”. You don’t have to go back to Europe; most of the big name forty and fifty somethings learned for five years full time, then found positions. Now kids are coming back from Israel and going to mini kollelim which is lovely, but I worry about this new mindset. It is dependent on serious support from parents and diverting from other causes.
