There are a lot of secular studies (as pointed out above) that are beneficial in learning Torah. Math, basic biology, chemistry, physics…sure, you don’t need to read Shakespeare, but basic English (grammar, comprehension etc) is important. History of America is important to understand the chesed of this country and how we fit in.
I don’t know why this is so controversial.
