This is not a stunt…it is a plea…let me explain…please be open before you judge. For the time being, let’s leave Rubashkin out of this and just consider the FACTS.
1. Anthony Weiner is a Democratic Congressman who has been in power for 12 years.
2. No one has run against him since 2004 since he is considered unbeatable.
3. Why? Because the district has 3 registered democrats for every
registered republican.
4. Bob Turner is 69 years old, was a successful businessman and needs this like a whole in the head. He was angry because he felt Weiner couldn’t care less about his district and approached the Republican party to make a contribution to their candidate. Except they did not have a candidate and talked HIM into running.
He agreed.
5. Now some of the issues that relate to the Orthodox Community
* RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUNDING: Weiner has no interest in changing laws that continue to prohibit public funding for religious institutions (i.e. yeshivas or Catholic schools). Turner believes that states that have laws prohibiting such funding is a form of religious discrimination and violates our constitution. This is huge as the average cost per NYC public school student in 2008-2009 was $16,578. Turner pledges to join forces with members of congress who have attempted to rectify this, but so far have failed. Weiner has stated he is opposed to public funding of religious institutions.
Based on the above, who do you think most Orthodox Jews would vote for. It should be a no-brainer just based on the first issue.
However, Orthodox Jews do NOT know about Bob Turner, nor do they know about Weiner’s positions…The Jewish media by and large, do not want to write about Turner unless he agrees to take out advertising. They are failing their people. Meanwhile, Weiner is getting headlines by writing letters in support of Rubashkin and seems like a hero. However, keep in mind Weiner was silent for over two years about Rubashkin and only when he realized because of the political climate and his extremely liberal positions in a conservative district he could be defeated, did he in August write the letter to the Attorney General AND THEN PROMPTLY PUBLICIZED it. In short, he is a phony. He could not care less about Rubashkin. In fact, this will BACKFIRE for Rubashkin, because WEINER is trying to publicly embarrass and put pressure on the Attorney General, who will resent it and take a more hardened view. If Weiner truly cared about Rubashkin, he would approach the prosecutors quietly, without a public circus. As a representative Weiner makes laws, and knows better than to get involved in the Judicial Branch of our government. But he will stop at nothing and sacrifice anyone for his meglomaniac ambitions. (Did you know he publicly announced he is running for Mayor in 2012–he wants to use us as pawns for his ambitions; as soon as he gets elected he will concentrate his energy on the mayoral race, while his district could go to pot.)
In Summary, There is no doubt in my mind that Anthony Weiner is an unbelievable hypocrite, he is deceitful, he is a “Chillul Hashem,” yet is getting away–for the time being–with it.
[Rav Moshe Feinstein, in Iggrot Moshe, Orach Chaim, Part 4, Responsa 115, adopted a very strong position against homosexuality. Human drives are necessary although they must be controlled. Since there is no purpose for the homosexual drive, Rav Moshe contends, it must not be a true drive. Therefore, the underlying reason for gay behavior, he argues, must be to rebel against God, to wish to do something forbidden (perhaps, implying some innate knowledge of its forbidden nature).
My only desire is to let voters know this year they have a choice.
And to make known our shepherds (rabbis and newspaper editors) are failing us by their silence.
