Question: In your recent article on “kiruv failures” you printed a posuk and spelled out the shem havayah. Is it allowed to spell out the tetragramaton name of Hashem if it’s not in a sefer? And is it allowed for us to erase the name when we close the page? I posted this question on your contact form but have not received a response.
Answer: It is permitted ??????? to write Hashem’s name for Divrei Torah under circumstances where it is not likely to be disgraced. It is a machlokes whether the page may be erased, and in my opinion it is generally accepted to be permitted because one is not erasing physical words, just interrupting the flow of electrons and preventing the words from being formed in the future. However, since some Poskim are machmir regarding erasing Hashem’s name on a computer screen and it is easily avoidable by using a kinuyi, it would be preferable to be machmir in the future.
