In the modern orthodox world, almost all rabbis have undergraduate degrees and many have masters degrees or doctorates, not as a “back up” but because it makes them better rabbis. Some of the more common choices of fields include Jewish history, Jewish philosophy, academic bible or talmud, education, and psychology.
