Avraham was definitely a rebel against the status quo of idolatry, but by the time of Yaakov and the shevatim a new Jewish status quo could be said to have established and it became very important to conform to it, the pattern could be seen to be repeated many times and it takes great judgement to know when to apply this or that quality, iconoclast or staunch defender of the faith and morality.
