Haleivi, The HOSTS file is mainly used by malware to ensure access to their sites and blocked access to good sites. I have seen HOSTS used when using an ssl-vpn when you can access private ip’s but not the local dns server, but otherwise, it’s mostly for malware. Why would you use HOSTS instead of a small server running a dns daemon?
Of course you can undo the changes made. The point is that when you robotically click the link, it’s blocked, and you have a chance to stop yourself. If you try you can get around most filters too. The idea is you have a chance to rethink your decision.
BTW I tested the ip using a dnsquery once I blocked it, and it didn’t work. Also, most CR links refer to http://www.theyeshivaworld.com and would not work once blocked.
