I went to a public university and never had any classes on Shabbos either and since in college few people want to go on Friday, there were rarely any classes on Fridays after 12:15
The school was closed for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and you just took off for Succos, (Pesach might or might not be spring break) and Shavouth
