mdd: You are certainly right in saying that I have not learned enough! As far as the matter of “novol birshus hatorah”, check the Ramban and you will see that he quotes this as a matter of extra kedusha, even as it is actually muttar (allowed). Clearly, he deals with matters that are allowed as per halacha but the Torah asks us to do something extra. Other rishonim disagree but this is the Ramban. Nonetheless, this Ramban has little to do with the our subject- which is whether one can use his/her own mind in “milei d’alma”.
