That can happen, regardless. My exterminator put out the poison baits, and I expressed concern that the mice would die in the walls and stink. He informed me that there are ALREADY dead mice in every foundation and wall, and if it stinks for a day or so, the smell goes away quickly. And so it was. I am so eckled right now from this whole discussion, that I cannot even watch a Disney cartoon with my ainekel!
