    The Jews were rewarded with two crowns for preceding naaseh by nishma. Asks the Ksav Sofer, why two crowns when precession is only one? He explains that it reveals the meaning of nishma which cannot mean to hear, as you cannot do before hearing so it means to understand, deserving two crowns, whereas hearing does not deserve a crown because it is part of doing.

    It says משה קבל תורה מסיני it does not say בסיני. Hashem gave the Torah on Mount Sinai which is 1/64 of the highest mountain Mount Tabor. This is the teaching of 1/8 of an 1/8 or 1/64 of humility a talmid chacham should have. So we can learn from Sinai the importance of humility when it comes to learning Torah.

    interesting .. lets look at pshat of your drash:
    mt Tabor is 588 metres (194 for Americans 🙂
    then Har Sinai should be 36m high…

    Now, if you take 1/64th of Everest gives you 553 m, still does not match Jabal Musa that might be Mt Sinai (2285m)… BUT J Musa prominence (height from the bottom, not from the sea) is 334 meters… Of course, Mishna was not talking to Chinese, so maybe they meant the highest (in prominence) mountain in the general Middle East/Europe/North-East Africa area – Either Damavand or Kilimanjaro or Elbrus or Dashen or Mt Blanc: 1/16th of all of them is between 250 to 370 meters –
    exactly Jabal Musa!

    of course, it could be that Jabal Musa is not Har Sinai …

    Explains the Olalos Ephraim (Klei Yakar) that Moshe Rabbenu was humble to go to Mitzraim, saying mi anochi, so Hashem said to him, that is why I chose you in the first place as will give the Torah on Har Sinai because of its humility.

    My pshat is on sheminis shebeshminis is the mishna in the sixth perek of Avos in 8th mishna there are eight words, hanoh, vekoach, vekakovad etc. according to the Binah Leitim are the main cause of gaiva, so we have to conrol these qualities as Rebbi and his children.

    How fortunate are the daf yomi yidden that learned the gemara today in Yoma Daf 35.
    § The Sages taught: A poor person, and a wealthy person, and a wicked person come to face judgment before the Heavenly court for their conduct in this world. The members of the court say: Why did you not engage in Torah?

    Q:
    Should I stay up on Shavuos night?

    A:
    There’s no question that it’s a big zchus to stay up on Shavuos night. Now, some people however are ill, they’re physically weak, so I’m not telling you what to do. But if you’re capable, there’s no reason why not because it’s a demonstration of what we said before – for an important event it pays to be up all night.

    There was one time when I was in Williamsburg – the old Satmerer Rav was still alive then. So I went in to see him because I was going to do something, a job, for him. I was the one who composed the advertisement against the Zionists that was placed in the New York Times – I wrote it for the Satmerer Rav. So I went in to him and he gave me a bracha that I should succeed. And I was up all night writing that article. Over and over again, I worked on it. All night I was up because it was important!

    Now, when you’re going to accept the Torah and you know how important it is, so you stay up all night. Just like they stayed up that night at Har Sinai. That’s our tradition, that they were up all night. They couldn’t sleep; they didn’t want to sleep, they were so excited. The truth is that you do want to sleep, but l’zeicher, to remember what our forefathers did we act as if we are excited to stay up all night.

    Now we have to know that everything in the halacha is with a grain of salt. It’s not a mitzvah min hatorah to stay up. It’s not even a takanas chachomim. It’s a minhag of the Am Yisroel. And therefore, if you have any chashoshos, any suspicions, about your health, so consult somebody. And if he’ll tell you it’s better you should sleep, so you go to sleep. But otherwise there’s no question that Klal Yisroel is up that night and it makes a tremendous impression on them. They feel like they’re walking in the footsteps of our fathers who prepared in that manner by staying up all night waiting for that great day of Kabolas Hatorah.

    Bloodletting on the New Moon and on the second day of the month causes weakness; bloodletting on the third day of the month leads to danger. Bloodletting on the eve of a Festival causes weakness; bloodletting on the eve of the festival of Shavuot leads to danger. And the Sages issued a decree prohibiting bloodletting on the eve of every Festival due to the festival of Shavuot. On Shavuot, an evil spirit named Tibbuaḥ, from the Hebrew word meaning slaughter, emerges, as had the Jewish people not accepted the Torah on the festival of Shavuot, Tibbuaḥ would have slaughtered their flesh and their blood. Consequently, it remains a dangerous day.

    A clarification there on a wealthy person. It really talks about a person who inherited his wealth from his businessman father. So, he does not really have much yetzer hara for being busy with the business!

    His father loved building up the business, but seemingly he is not discussed and is not the one expected to have a problem with learning. Either he is an active person in general and will learn with the same zeal as he is working, or maybe his building up a successful business counts as tzedokah.

    Now, his son does not need to build anything, everything works without even workers knowing who he is, his yetzer hara is simply to enjoy the wealth, he may even be depressed that he can’t be as great as his father, and the example illustrates that he needs to dedicate his status to learning (and maybe this way making his father’s business even more meaningful).

    In most Sephardic congregations, before the Tora is read on the first day of Shabu’ot, we recite a very special “marriage certificate or Ketuba” which compares the relationship between God and Israel to a “marriage”. The Covenant of Love between God and Israel that we remember on Shabu’ot was formalized with the giving of the Tora, in the same way that a marriage between husband and wife is formalized with the giving of the Ketuba. This comparison between the God-Israel’s covenant and a marriage is not new. It is mentioned numerous times in the Tanakh. Interestingly, the Haftara that we read this last Shabbat (Hoshea 2: 21-22) mentions the beautiful words that God said to Israel: “I will take you as My wife forever. I will marry you with justice, right, kindness and compassion. I will marry you and I will be eternally faithful to you, and thus you will know that I am Your God… ” .
    The Shavuot ketuba was written by R’ Yisroel Najara (1555-1625) who lived at the end of his life in Gaza.

    The entire year in our daily Torah learning, Derech Eretz always comes first and then comes Torah not only during sefira and when we’re getting ready for shavuous and kabbalas hatorah.

    I write this after Shavuous of this year already ended cause Derech Eretz is a 24-7 job of every person. And over the entire year and not only during specific times like holidays.

    Rav Hirsch insisted that approving of derech eretz before Torah, is not Torah at all.

    Even when learning we should be careful how we communicate with derech eretz and not call one names as it says יפה תלמוד תןרה עם דרך ארץ, meaning also to learn with derech eretz.

    What is interesting when the goyim ask what is written in the Torah, Hashem tells them exactly what they don’t like, Esav don’t kill, Yishmoel, don’t commit adultery and so on? Maybe we can explain this with a mashel, parable from the Dubner Maggid on the rasha in the Hagadah. A man only had enough money for yom tov needs. He sees on the street a nice suit being sold. He likes it so much that he spends his money on it. His wife gets upset that he spent his money of yom tov and tells him to take it back. He tells the dealer to give him back the money as there is a fault in it. He gives him back the money without any question. The customers around are surprised why he did not offer him an exchange. He explains that I happen to understand that this customer regrets the purchase and the fault found is just an excuse to get the money returned. Similarly over here, the goyim want an excuse not to accept the Torah by finding a fault, so Hashem provides it to them.

    The Rav Haflaah explains why they overslept kabolas Hatorah. It says by Korach that the same way as you were unable to make from the day night so can you cannot change this. When did they want to make from the day night? The Jews held that before the acceptance of Torah they were considered a Benei Noach were the day starts from netz hachama, sunrise whereas by the Hashem says that the days starts at alos hashachar, the rise of the morning star. He waited for them at that time but they did not recognize it as the start of the day thinking that it is still night.
