Did you see the new magazine that hit the newstands today? Just picked up a copy and it looked awesome. Does anyone have any info about it?

Is this a new Mishpacha type competitor?

I picked one up in Pomegranate and I’ve been seeing ads on websites. Have’nt looked through it yet but heard through the grapevine that its supposed to be a cut above the rest of the mags. Anyway I’m glad to have more reading material. I’ll post again when I’ve gotten a chance to look at it.

Certainly looks like a Mishpacha competitor! If the rest of the issues are as exciting as this one seems to be, it may be stiff competition. But I personally would buy both. Its just a couple of bucks.

Just bought the magazine have been hearing through the Grapevine about it for months. I cant wait to read it!! The magazine is written by Mrs. Rechy Frankfurter formally the head editor of Mishpacha. I have missed reading all her great articles she is a masterful editor and have noticed a major decline in the quality of the articles since she left. If she maintains the same standards that she had when she was with Mishpach then the magazine will sell like hot cakes.

I didn’t see any decline in the quality of Mishpacha, its getting better every week. As with the new magazine I geuss the competion will push both of them to do their best.

I must tell you so far so good the articles are

amazing. I don’t know how yitta halberstam thought of that article about collecting other peoples garbage but it was extremely

intriguing. I also thought M lax’s article was great

it nice to have a magazine with such diverse articles there really is something for everyone to read

I picked one up in Pomegranate and I’ve been seeing ads on websites.

I also saw ads on a website – the YWN Coffee Room.

If you realized, the promoters of this new magazine (on this thread) joined the Coffee Room for this thread… We might be stupid but not blind… Let’s keep the CR for honest conversations not manipulating ones!

Ok Joseph, I mean Dave Hirsch, I mean Helpful, I mean brisker.

    That was an important comment.

    Carry on….

I know that Ami magazine is a big advertiser on this site, so this post may be deleted.

However, I must express how deeply disappointed I was last night when I read through the magazine, how it is a COPYCAT of Mishpacha magazine- virtually exactly the same style, a women’s and kid’s magazine included, virtually the same layouts, news blurbs at the beginning and then long stories of old-fashioned finds, with some more articles thrown in, serial stories, and it even looks like they are using the same graphic designers as Mishpacha!

I’m an entrepreneur and part of what I do is research how I can do better than my competition, HOWEVER, I do not copycat my competition and call the work my own. I look at my competition and see how I can service my target audience better and more effectively.

Copycatting is really not an admirable trait.

I see nothing wrong. Maybe after the first Jewish magazine no one else can start a mag, since they are a copycat? Copying ideas are the best form of flattery.

Thinking and thinking- it’s all about politics and competition. ALL businesses are like that.

I don’t think some people are seeing the inner meaning of what YW Editor is saying here… try reading it again.

Everyone sees, everyone knows. It’s just that nobodys surprised!

    #1010930

I don’t know if there’s anything halachically wrong with copying a business idea; I just know that if I was an owner of Mishpacha, I would be furious.

How would you feel if you researched, tested, risked money, and created something new and marketed it to our community – let’s say you spent five years developing and marketing the Shabbos Lamp. Then, a few years after your Shabbos Lamp is on the market, along comes Mr. Ami Lamp who swipes your entire product idea, produces a virtually identical lamp, and markets it in the same stores and publications where you market yours, and he calls it the Non-Muktza-Lamp.

I don’t know if there are potential Hasagas Gevul problems or patent problems with this scenario, but I do know that the original creator of the Shabbos Lamp would not be pleased.

Why couldn’t Ami Magazine have figured out a somewhat different format and style for their magazine, rather than “riding” on Mishpacha’s years of experience and “swiping” their style and format? C’mon, Ami folks, be creative – there’s endless room for creativity in the magazine industry – by showing yourself to be a copycat I have already lost respect for your publication during week #1. (although I may still continue buying it, not sure yet if I like it enough.)

My husband just walked in with Ami so I haven’t read it thoroughly yet, but from a quick glance, yes, it looks like all the others but what’s wrong with that? Have you ever seen a “real” newsstand? How many fashion magazines does the world need?

obviously it looks like Mishpacha. The one who started was the editor for Mishpacha until very recently. I would love to see it though does anyone know if its sold in Israel?

I picked up the new Ami magazine and enjoyed reading it. Interesting articles and good advice. Nice to see a picture of a Rav and a little girl about 7 years old. Nice that females have not disappeared in a frum publication. Hope to see pictures of prominent frum women from our past.

It is a continuation of the now defunct Sha’a Tovah magazine. Restarted in a more Mishpacha like format to try to be more competitive with them.

The premier issue was just a pre-issue. They stated explicitly that the first issue will be Dec. 15.

I live in EY. This week when I went to buy the Mishpacha, I decided I would buy the Ami instead, (wouldn’t splurge on both 😉 ) When I got to my news stand the AMI wasn’t there, so I got the Mishpacha. I think the Ami should see to it that they get to all the news stands. I thoroughly enjoyed their first copy and await the second.

Perhaps you don’t see anyone buy it because you get to the news stand to late and all copies are already sold out. Perhaps they have home delivery. What does your teacher discuss from AMI?
