How’s everyone’s running doing in the cold weather?

Shindy – have you joined any of those Freehold races?

    Saying goodbye for a bit…

Going away for 2 weeks to a balmy climate. Yay!

Taking my running gear, because I want to leave footprints in the sand and not beach chair prints…ok, maybe there’ll be some of those:)

    Sayonara!

Our treadmill just died so I may have to actually run outside now… I’m not looking forward to it but I have a running suit. As far as my head… we’ll see…

I’m hating the cold right now, it’s just awful! If I didn’t have a ski mask to run in, I don’t think I could withstand the wind factor, and it’s only going to be getting colder. waaaaaa

I love running though, so some cold, wind, rain, or snow isn’t going to stop me!

Only 9 1/2 more months! Am I going to see any of you folks there? We should create a YW CR Team!!!

Anyone else here find it incredibly awful to run in the snow and ice?! I miss the warm weather! Let’s just hope the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow this year 😉

I don’t mind the cold and snow. Ice is the huge problem. I’d rather run on the treadmill than risk some broken bones when it’s too icy outside.

i like the cold, but the ice is horrible!!! i only ran for 45min today cause i didn’t want to turn into an ice-icle!!! i know a guy who just walked to shul yesterdday & broke his arm on the ice!!! it’s crazy out there!!!

Where I run, there are several ice patches (especially when I run in the early mornings). When I come face to face with the menacing ice patch, I hop right over it (praying that I don’t miscalculate and fall flat on my face). Does anyone recall the endless rain we had a little while back? There were puddles everywhere. One was so deep, I practically swam across it (no joke!). My toes were icicles and my sneakers were drenched and were terribly heavy.

Hey, anyone have funny, or interesting running stories they’d like to share?

I hope you all took huge advantage of the gorgeous weather today! It was amazing!

Yoshi – During my run today, I passed an old Russian guy with a cane. As I pass him, he starts yelling “Faster, faster, faster!” I had a good laugh. I guess he wants me to make up for whatever he can’t.

And I am the only one who attracts dogs while I’m running? I hate them!

Curious – You have not been using YWN or the CR long enough. I don’t need an invitation to any thread.

Here’s my attempt to get Ashreinu and yoshi back:

Any of you monitor your HR while running?

When I use the treadmill, I check my HR every so often and it shoots up much higher than I’d like it to. I’ve tried running slower and it has helped a little, but my HR is still sustained at a much higher rate than it should be.

(You can check out Runner’s World for the desired HR zones)

Unfortunately, there was a tragedy a few days ago where a young man running on a treadmill was niftar: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/article.php?p=30062

In the comments somebody posted that there are some young people who have certain heart conditions that can make exercise dangerous.

With whatever criteria you’re using, “v’nishmartem me’od” would be a waste of time as well. Just eat lotsa sugar, junk food, processed foods (the more preservatives and chemicals the better!) make sure to overeat, don’t get checkups, don’t use a dentist or any other medial practitioner (G-d forbid) and whatever you do, DON’T EAT YOUR VEGGIES! They’re a waste of precious time too! Don’t make any efforts to improve general wellbeing in life AT ALL – that is DEFINETELY a waste of time.

(Sorry for the sarcasm, it’s outta character for me, but that comment was just begging for it)

torahtziva: i forgot who states(if smeone else knows, please tell us.$ that it’s important for a person to excersise his body.$

    ames, I’m flattered.

If you have a treadmill at home or a gym membership, you can run indoors. Also, I don’t run within my neighborhood. I’ll either walk (my warmup) away from the center and then run, or I’ll drive to a park/not so populated frum area.

Disclaimer: I do NOT run daily, if I run 3-4x/week I’m happy. This AM I set my alarm clock early to go run before work. Instead… hit snooze and went right back to bed 😉

torahtzivah – I do both at the same time, run while listening to a shiur. What’s better than that? Tending to body and soul.

torahtziva: yes learning torah is healthier, yet we need time to unwind in a healthy way too!!! as qwertyuiop mentioned it’s important to do excersise in order so that you can better serve Hashem & do mitzvos!!!

qwertyuiop: i think that vort is in referance to shema!!!

Curious: ha i hope you make up for that run by running double time next time!!!

WOW! It’s so nice to see that this thread is still alive! YAY! How has everyone’s running been in this bitter and windy cold winter? I hate running in the cold, and I hate having to wear so many layers, it just weighs so much to run with. I just wanted to announce that I’m up to 13.5 miles now and approximately 70 miles a week!! I just hope I’m able to make it more than 26 miles by November…
