Are the english police stupid for not using water cannons?
As citizens flee neighborhoods in fear, both politicians and newspapers are calling for the use of water cannons, and possibly even tear gas, to drive looters away. Although England has never used the method, water cannons are employed as crowd-control tools in many Euopean countries, as well as the United States.
Home Secretary Theresa May, who has been vocal during the whole ordeal, rejected the idea outright Tuesday. The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon,” she said. “The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.”
However, some politicians disagree with May, and are insisting that the police be allowed to use any means necessary to quell a situation that has so far been uncontrollable.
“I am not saying that is necessarily what we want, but we have got to allow the police to use their powers and, once they have arrested individuals, for the judiciary to be able to punish them,” Patrick Mercer, a Conservative MP and former army officer, told BBC Television Tuesday morning.
“They should have the tools available, and they should use them if the commander on the ground thinks it is necessary. I don’t think we have necessarily to mollycoddle Englishmen because we don’t mollycoddle Irishmen,” he added, referring to the use of water cannons on rioters in Northern Ireland last month.

Absolutely Getzel1. Do you know how tough the French Riot Police are. People run and shiver when they see them coming. I think Britian has its good points, as its very diplomatic, but its gone too far, when it comes to taking a stand when drama and action are called for.
It’s not that they are stupid; it’s just that they are still living in their perfect Marxist dream world! They think if the cops won’t carry any guns -so neither will the perps. They are just starting to get an education. I got my education in the late sixties, when everyone was screaming -“Burn baby, Burn”.
Unfortunately, NYC is very much similar. They have extremely tough gun control, but crime is on the rise. In the early 90’s, the city held the police back during riots in CH, saying “Let them vent -they need to”! A Yid Nebech was killed because of this policy.
Liberalism doesn’t have the answer to society’s problems, esp. when it comes to crime. I think in the last 30-40 years when the libs have been in control of this country -there has been more crime than in the whole history of this country.
If a lion was walking the street -they would take him and lock him up in the zoo forever. Why is a perp who commits/committed crimes any different?

I taught 45 hours last week. Add to that the prep time. I wasn’t here very often.

BTW, there’s no summer vacation in your school?
Summer camp is much more intensive than our regular, yearly program.
And I wasn’t offended, except by the whoever thinks “English” doesn’t need to be capitalized. 😉

The British police don’t HAVE any water cannon. They’d need to bring them in from Ireland! Thats why they haven’t used them ’till now.
