    1. How can parents find a babysitter when needed? How hard is it?

It depends. In some neighborhoods its very easy. In others not.

    2. What range is the going rate for a babysitter?

    $5 – $10 per hour.

    3. Is it okay to hire a neighborhood boy to babysit?

    If he wants to.

    4. Please share whatever babysitter horror stories you know.

I don’t know of any in my neighborhood.

    5. How late is still normal to arrive back home to the babysitter?

Again it depends. In Lakewood, during the school year, it is 11:00 PM (as I have been told). Personally, I used to ask the babysitter what time we should be home so that the babysitter won’t be sleepy the next day. We allow our daughter to babysit later if there is no school the next day.

    6. How does the babysitters age affect your relying on her to be responsible?

Again, it depends. We had babysitters as young as 14 or 15.

    7. What else is important to know?

What nosh and drinks the babysitter likes to eat. Make sure they have your cell phone number.

Every season the American Red Cross runs Baby Sitting certification classes in most communities. The fee is less than $20 (or free in our town as the town provides the space and tuition as a community service)
We had our two youngest take this course and felt much more comfortable allowing them to babysit after formal training as to what steps to take in an emergency, what is proper behavior while babysitting, basic first aid response, etc.

In addition to references, I’d insist on certification/formal training before engaging the services of a baby sitter for my grandchildren.
This past week when we hosted my daughter’s chassunah, I hired 3 graduates of the spring class to supervise the youngest guests so their parents could enjoy the simcha weekend.

CTL: Do you only use frum babysitters?

    @Joseph
If a babysitter were to be left alone in our home and expected to feed the children, yes we’d use only Frum babysitters.
In an instance such as watching the grandchildren at a chassunah we’re hosting and are both present and providing all food and drink, there is no reason for the babysitter to even be Jewish. In fact I’d rather a non-Jew than have a non-frum Jew as a role model or person in authority,

I babysit, so answering from that perspective.
    1. I get jobs either when families I babysit for recommend me to their friends, or from babysittign whatsapps that I’m on where moms post when they need a babysitter.
    2. $10-$15/hour (at least where I am)
    3. Sure, as long as you dont have girls three or older because then there will be yichud issues
    4. BH dont have any
    5. It depends on who it is, when you are hiring them ask what time they can still until.
    6. It doesnt. I know 14 year olds who are way more responsible babysitters than 20 year olds.
    7. Make sure you can contact them and they can contact you,
BEFORE THEY COME YOU SHOULD KNOW HOW THEY WILL BE GETTING THERE AND GOING HOME. if they cant go home alone, either bring them or hire an uber.

Wouldn’t boys over three pose a yichud issue for a girl babysitter? The yichud issue is the same both ways.

No, yichud for a boy starts at 9.

770Chabad: Until I was 8 years old (and my siiblings were 11 and 10) our main baby sitter was our uncle.

(If ) there are other younger kids up

All the kids are sleeping and a neighbor can pop in

no, girls over 3 and boys over 13 are yichud. boys over 9 and girls over 12 are yichud. see the difference?
btw, if there are two other sleeping kids over the age of 5, or one awake, it takes away the yichud.

joseph- i babysit a nine year old boy and theres no yichud because there is always a chance someone can walk in, their cousins or other relatives randomly sto by. also its only an issue while theyre sleeping when theyre up the two boys are shomrim fro each other.

I guess I’m weird then. I babysat quite a bit back when I was teen (many, many years ago).

While all the above mentions of the Halachot of Yichud are correct, there many complications. One should ask a Rav.
