There is this whole thing going around now since NASA confirmed that there will be 4 total-lunar eclipse on Pesach and Succos 2014 and 2015. They are called blood-red moons since the eclipse gives a blood-red appearance to the moon.

The passuk says that before moshiach comes,

    “???? ???? ????? ????? ??? ???? ??? ??? ?’ ????? ??????” (???? ?:?)

“The sun will turn into darkness and the moon blood [red]…”

There is also a Gemara (If someone knows were this is please tell me) That a blood-moon is a Siman that a sword is coming to the world.

Both partial-eclipses and total-eclipses are pretty common. After 2014, there will be total-lunar eclipses every 10-20 years. But the thing is, it rarely occurs back to back on Yom Tov.

2014 and 2015, there will be 4 total-lunar eclipses all falling out on Yom Tov; Pesach 2014 and 2015, Succos 2014 and 2015,

There were only three other times there were four total-lunar eclipses on Pesach and Succos, like this year.

In May 1948 less than 24 hours after Israel proclaims independence, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq invade Israel, war lasts 15 months, the 1st Israeli war of independence. There are four blood moons on Pesach and Succos years 1949-1950.

Pesach and Succos 1967-1968, there are four total-lunar eclipses. The six day war beaks out.

Of the 4 upcoming eclipses, only 1 will be visible in Israel. And NASA hasn’t just confirmed it, in fact they’ve already computed the eclipses for the next thousand years.

they’ve already computed the eclipses for the next thousand years -you’re right, but they just updated their website on March 4. Also, there is a partial solar eclipse on Rosh Hashanah in 2015.

    . . . the 1st Israeli war of independence.

It wasn’t the first, it was the only War of Independence.

The gemara is on the second-to-last amud of the second perek of Succah if I remember correctly (it starts around where the page gets wider near the bottom).

The passuk says that before moshiach comes,

    ???? ???? ????? ????? ??? ???? ??? ??? ?’ ????? ??????”

“The sun will turn into darkness and the moon blood [red]…”

This is the passuk that Dr Stanz and Dr Zeddmore discussed in Ghostbusters while trying to figure out why they had experienced an increase in supernatural activity around the tri state area

Of course, let’s keep in mind that there is a bias towards lunar eclipses happening on Pesach and Succos as opposed to any other day or the month — as the only time a lunar eclipse can occur is when the moon is full (and, for that matter, the only time a solar eclipse can occur is during the molad — hence right around Rosh HaShannah).

    This is false.

    It also happened in 1930-31 (Apr 13/Oct 7/Apr 2/Sep 26)

    Wolf,

Please stop confusing us with the facts.

If you’re going to bring logic into the picture (as in considering the fact that Succos, Pesach, and lunar eclipses occur only when the moon is full) you’re going to ruin the whole thread.

And, come to think of it, at least a few other ones as well.

If you live in New York City and are still here on May 1, 2079 (that’s only 65 years away, folks), a total solar eclipse is going to go right through the city. In fact, the center of the path of totality will cut right through Manhattan Beach. You can also be on the very center of the path of totality if you’re standing on Flatbush Avenue, just south of the Belt Parkway interchange.

Totality will be 2 minutes, 9 seconds.

that’s very interesting if it did, because that’s just when the great depression hit rock-bottom.

also, if the gemara says blood-moons are a bad siman, it must be true, no?

I feel bad for our great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren. There will be no more eclipses in a few million years. And they’ll lose the rings of Saturn over time (50-100 million years). And the falls part of Niagara Falls will have eroded by then. In the year 7 million, Mount Rushmore will not exist. They also won’t have me. Then again, the Andromeda galaxy will collide with our Milky Way in 4 million years. They’ll get to see awesome supernovas and galactic collisions. That would be pretty cool to experience.

This is all completely true, btw. I got my info from a very reliable source. You’re on it now.

    Succah 29a

Our Rabbis taught, When the sun is in eclipse it is a bad omen for idolaters; when the moon is in eclipse, it is a bad omen for Israel, since Israel reckons by the moon and idolaters by the sun. If it is in eclipse in the east, it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the east; if in the west, it is a bad omen for those who dwell in the west; if in the midst of heaven it is bad omen for the whole world. If its face is red as blood, [it is a sign that] the sword is coming to the world; if it is like sack-cloth, the arrows of famine are coming to the world; if it resembles both, the sword and the arrows of famine are coming to the world.

If the eclipse is at sunset calamity will tarry in its coming; if at dawn, it hastens on its way: but some say the order is to be reversed.

But when Israel fulfill the will of the Omnipresent, they need have no fear of all these [omens]

8 Oct 2014 a blood moon will occur on (Succos Yom Tov) in the west (USA) at 6:25 in the morning. This moon can not even be seen in Israel. Perhaps those that can make aliyah should make aliyah…

I don’t have a gemara on me, but I think the maharsha says that the Gemara is referring to eclipses out of the norm; those that can be caluclated are part of teva and not a siman

This eclipse will not be on succos… its erev succos tomorrow. If you’re on the east coast make sure you have a high vantage of the horizon or you’ll see nothing.

Enjoy the spectacle and remember lo s’nachashu.

so before I quoted something from the maharsha, then said it didn’t exist. Today I saw where I had seen it. The he’aros r’ elyashiv, sukkah 29a, quoting a radvaz (not the maharsha). he doesn’t say where it is.
