Do you have to wash and say hamotzi if you add croutons (the ones that look like toasted bread at a salad bar) to your salad??

You for sure don’t have to wash unless there is a K’zayis worth of croutons in the salad and cannot make Al N’tilas Yadayim unless there is a K’beitzah (also keep in mind that there is a lot of air in the croutons). On the Bracha and the particular cases, this is a large Machlokes that may or may not depend on where or how or why the croutons were made, what they were made out of, and how crunchy they are. Unless the croutons meet very specific conditions, it’s best not to eat them outside of a Seudah that you already made Hamotzi during.

Yikes. So no Caesar salad unless we wash?

I wouldn’t, that’s for sure. Not unless the croutons met very, very specific standards (none of which any salad croutons on the market meet that I know of). There are certainly many who are slightly more Meikil in this than I am (it’s hard to be more Machmir but I’m sure there’s someone who’s managed it 🙂 ), but if whoever you usually hold by is then I can’t say that they’re wrong. There are a lot of opinions out there on this.

    Thanks for answering.

Guess I’ll be more careful about washing in the future!

You take psak halacha based upon online discussions??

Just remember, according to the P’sak of the Shulchan Aruch you cannot make an Al Netilas Yadayim unless you have a K’beitzah of bread. So even if you have croutons that are Vadai Hamotzi (i.e. just dried bread) you wash without a Bracha unless there’s a pretty good amount.

If you’re already eating croutons is a little bread that bad? Just because it’s a salad doesn’t make it healthy. 🙂

No, choppy. I’m choosing to be machmir, as it’s easier than attempting to describe the crouton to my rabbi or holding a piece to show him till whenever….

“Choosing to be machmir” in this case is a misnomer, since YOUR Rov may hold Hamotzi is the WRONG bracha, in this case.

Choppy: “Choosing to be Machmir” in this case would mean not eating it outside a Seuda where you already made Hamotzi.

Most caesar salad croutons are cubes of toasted bread. Assuming that there are many of them in the salad (and typically there are), there surely would be a sizeable amount to equal the requirement for washing and saying hamotzee. I actually checked it out when I just had a salda serving, and there was enough croutons cubes to equal more than a slice of bread. The best thing to do, however, is to simply get a slice of bread and wash for it.

By machmir I mean I would choose to wash and eat actual bread so as to cover all my bases.

You mean to tell me that Hamotzi would be wrong on an actual piece of bread???

I didn’t think so. You must have misunderstood.

While we are on the topic of brochos, I have been questioning people asking what the brocha on avocado is? Most say haadama, but I believe haeitz.

1st timer: Rabbi Forst’s sefer – The Laws of Berochos states that the brocho for avacados are haeitz. They grow on trees so I don’t know why anyone would think to make a haadama.

Why are the croutons different to bread eaten to accompany salty fish which you don’t make a berachah on?

Pcoz: Because there the bread is serving no purpose of taste or to fill you up whatsoever. It’s completely Tafeil because it’s only purpose is to make the fish palatable. That’s not true with the salad.

What makes you think that “most” say haadama? And why do you “believe” haeitz and not check for sure?

The real name for avocado is avocado pear. Think of this and you’ll know it’s a haeitz! Check any of many english brachos sefarim, though not all have the same bracha for everything!
