Does the same okay apply to lemon and lime juices? Or do those peels not have scales at all?

I will not express a personal opinion because I did not do my own research. People have told me that R’ Chaim Kanievsky was not presented with the correct set of facts. Why don’t you email the author of that article and see how he responds to that question?

I do know of some well known poskim who recommend being machmir, but I don’t know of any who actually say it’s assur (I do know some lesser known who do).

I have not heard of anyone who tested and found a problem with anything besides Tropicana.

Are the insects in the juice the same halachic status as insects in the NYC water supply?

Please note that is been shown that the author of the article in the five towns Jewish times that started this made some factual errors

Back in December, the OK issued its own response to the claims of bugs in the tropicana juice. I am copying and pasting their statement from another site, but you can find it yourself with your own browser.

    ===============================================================

The OK Kosher certification, headed by Rabbi Don Yoel Levy, has released the following statement on Friday, December 5, 2014:

OK Kosher stands behind the kosher status of all Tropicana juices bearing the OK symbol.

In response to recent reports relating to Tropicana juices, the OK tested the juices and also had them tested by an independent and knowledgeable posek, and all agreed that there are no halachic kashrus issues.

In addition an independent laboratory tested the juices and found no traces of insects.

As always, consumers can rest assured that any product bearing the OK symbol is kosher without compromise.

The OK and Tropicana are the only ones claiming there are no bugs. The OK even implies that the Belzer Dayan, Rav Asher Anshel Eckstein, found no bugs, but in his teshuvah, he acknowledges that there are bugs. Take a look, it’s right there with the article.

The OK has lost a lot of credibility here.

Perhaps the company who made ezfilters for NYC water can make an ezfilter for orange juice.

PLEASE FWD THIS TO RABBI LACH —-if anyone in the CR knows him

    marbehshalom,

    Yes, there are full beryas.

I personally was shown the filtration process of Tropicana orange juice performed by an expert. There are definitely beryas in every cup. There are also a lot of fragments. Pretty disgusting. The beryas are not so small and are clearly nireh l’anayim. They are just covered with juice. When filtered, and carefully washed off, you can see the scale-bugs, if you know what a scale-bug looks like.

Reb Chaim Kanievsky shlita was told incorrect information. The article says what he was told, which is not accurate. He actually writes himself in his sefer on chumash that the Chazon Ish filtered all citrus juice because of these scale-bugs.

In more recent developments, mites are also being found in the juice. I just spoke to two experts on Erev Yom Tov who confirmed there are enough mites to be considered a miut hamotzuy.

Most of the articles released to the public which permit the juice are full of mis-information. The attitude of the kashrus organizations has been “it’s kosher. We just need to figure out why!” It’s a very sad situation.
