Elsewhere on yeshivaworld is a photo of a frum woman in a burka at the kever of RSBY. The comments are all derogatory.
In the time of the gemarah women wore burkas. In all likelihood, middle eastern jewish women wore burkas in muslim countries.
The gemarrah in shabbos even says that tzanua women only exposed one eye from their hajib.
So whats with all the hate? Cant we recognize this as a genuine form of tznius?

False. Even showing one eye is too revealing. We should follow in the footsteps of our forefathers and conceal all our women in boxes. Although you can poke air holes in a makom sakanah, it’s better to be machmir.

Various Sefardic halacha seforim from even a hundred years ago ruled women in those kehilos were required to cover most of their faces.

Because that was the minhag hamakom, Joseph. It’s not the minhag hamakom in almost every place where Jews live. In fact, in most places it is not tznius because it draws attention (unlike an actual tznius requirement- i.e. long skirts- that may draw attention, covering one’s face is not an actual tznius requirement where we live. Attracting attention through something that is not an actual tznius requirement it assur and not tznius).

How do you know there is a woman under all that cloth?

That is another concern about burkas. They provide an easy way for predators to pass as a woman.

I didn’t make any derogatory comments but it was not the Minhag in the time of the Gemorah for women to wear burkas There is a Misnah in Shabbos which discuss if wearing a burkah is ho’otza on shabbos, The rishonim on the mishna say that women who lived in Arab countries wore them but don’t imply any halacha requirement to. There is a Sdei Chemed (if I recall correctly) which discuses the following shaalo “If you live in a country where all women have their faces covered may you make a brocha in front of a women with her face uncovered or is this an issue of ervah” He says you most definitely can because the non-Jewish customs don’t guide us in the halachos of Tznuis. That is why I oppose women wearing burkas. We have a mesorah and halacha discussing what is tznuis. We don’t have to copy the Bnos Yismoel

In that same piece of gemarrah it states that you are chayiv for hotzah if a woman takes out enough makeup to cover one eye. Since the nashim tzanuim only exposed one eye, that amount is considered significant. Seems pretty clear to me.

They covered one eye but they wore makeup on the other! That doesn’t like a Burkah shito. But as above the Gemorah is discussing what was done. Not Hilchus Tznius.

Yet the Sdei Chemed was perfectly fine with the yiddishe women wearing it.

Far from being tzanua, the woman in that video clip is clearly trying to draw attention to herself and is enjoying the sensation she is causing. All the other women are sitting quietly whilst she is the only one standing, clapping her hands and melodramatically covering her eyes and swaying.

Some of the younger kids look scared of her (him?) All she (he?) is missing to complete the look is a trident.

But seriously, how do you identify a person in a burka? How do you know it’s not a criminal escaped from prison? Doesn’t it force men to talk to women who aren’t their wives in order to identify them?

How do you know the woman under the veil at the chupa wasn’t swapped after the Choson left the badeken?

The Kalloh has people around her the whole time. It would be very difficult for her to run off and change cloths with someone else. Very few Kallohs wear veils that she can’t be seen through at all.Even so some people are in fact makpid to lift the veil under the Chupa to make sure the Choson knows who is being mikadesh

Joseph, that’s not an argument for burkas, it’s an argument against badeken.

Okay, so if you’re against badekens you should be against burkas. If you’re for badekens you should be for burkas.

If the kalla showed up to the wedding hall in a burqa, I agree, they shouldnt go ahead with the chuppa.

just ask the makeup lady who is under the veil, she almost certainly touched up the kallahs make up before she walked down to the chuppa.
