So, I was thinking, since there are so many Americans on here (this site is probably run by Americans), who on here is Canadian or lives in Canada 😀 Anyone celebrating Canada Day here?
hello from Toronto, the largest frum Jewish community in north America without tons of chutzpa. try it you’ll like it. we have more daf yomi shiurim per capita than any city in the world outside of Eretz Yisroel.
I’m a proud Canadian and most definitely celebrating Canada day!!!! Except i wish the fireworks were better here:( J’aime le Canada!!!!!!!!!!!
You know it is a few weeks until Canada Day (July 1). I think Toi is also Canadian – originally, and there’s someone from Winnipeg who used to post often. But Canada is indeed a pretty good place to live. A government that is a better Friend to Israel and the Jewish people than any other in the world; a robust economy that weathered the recession pretty well; good Jewish infrastructure; freedom; and a beautiful, vast landscape.

The taxes in Canada are an absolute killer. Plus, I can make my own poutine at home, and there is fine quality kosher Maple Syrup available from Vermont and other places.
Montreal bagels are misshapen (I’ll take a hot Kossar’s bialy any day of the week).
rebdoniel: not in Alberta, the taxes there are reallly low, they have no provincial sales tax!

While income and sales taxes are higher in Canada and the US, property taxes tend to be much lower, especially compared to the suburbs of New York City. And the government pays most of the cost of your health insurance, which is a huge savings.
Also, some provinces make a very large contribution to the cost of Jewish day school education. (I know that Quebec and British Columbia do and that Ontario does not.)
Canada is not the US. They don’t have our way of government, nor our ideas about G-d and liberty. America is exceptional and is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Not Canada.

When we were fighting to stop the spread of communist tyranny in Southeast Asia, the Canadians welcomed draft dodgers with open arms, r”l. Another emasculated, European-type regime.

Hashem gave us Eretz Yisroel. Obviously He thinks Eretz Yisroel is the best country, or He would have given us Canada.

i live happily and proudly in montreal, but my heart is in E”Y, where i lived the first year of my marriage.
rebdoniel- not for nothing montreal-style bagels are famous and emulated in dozens of other cities.
taxes are a killer, health care is free, blah blah blah , like every other city, there are pros and cons. business is very tough here and most are having a very hard time, but we’re surviving. the weather is not as cold as it used to be, with a lot less snow, and we enjoy hot summers too. canada’s main business center undoubtedly is in toronto. all in all i dont know if its the best country but it definitely is way up there with the top 5.

I brought a 12 pack of molson canadian after bein hazmanim. that says it all.
Lived in both Montreal and Toronto. Relocated 3.5 years ago back to US. now living in Monsey.
Everything in life comes with a price-free Canadian medical care but long wait times to see a doctor or get treatments.
Very high taxes and a lot of invisible anti-Semitism(especially in Quebec). There are streets in Toronto where all you see are burka clad women. When I went to get my citizenship there was one woman covered from head to toe( don’t know how they knew who she was !)
We are happy in Monsey-its clean has all Jewish conveniences and you can reach Brooklyn, Lakewood and Baltimore without driving for 10 hours!

Since were talking about taxes, Corporate taxes in Ontario for small business is only 15.5%. The lowest corporate tax of the G7 countries!!!

My cousin just married a Canadian guy (from Montreal). My younger cousins thought that the fact that he can speak French was so cool, and they kept asking him how to say stuff in French. Then my mom, who understands French, was passing by as he was doing it and realized that he was making up jibberish (like, “how are you doing” turned into “my horse is purple.”
We’ve never trusted him when he was speaking French again.
While I don’t speak French, I think I know enough words that I’d know he was lying if he took things that far…
