Put mouthwash with a Q-tip directly on it. It will numb it so it wont hurt that bad. Brush your teeth frequently.

The medication sold for canker sores is carbamide peroxide gel, which generates oxygen that apparently cleanses and removes the sore. However, I wonder what advantages it has to simple hydrogen peroxide which does the same.

many of the over-the-counter 3% hydrogen peroxide solutions are not suitable for ingestion. A little bit probably won’t hurt you, but most carbamide peroxide is made to be used in the mouth.

Best solution is to take a multivitamin every day, or at least vitamin C, or drink a lot of OJ. You won’t get them any more.

tamazaball- Tincture of Myrh is very effective. I have used this on mouth ulcers for years. It stings when applied then it becomes numb. Within a few applications the mouth ulcers are healed and gone.

People sometimes confuse canker and cold sores; Where is this sore?

canker sores are in the mouth there not contagoius but hurt alot, how can i prevent it and make it go away faster? cold sores are on or near your lips. thats the difrence

    #702229

tamazaball- What I described (mouth ulcer on the cheek inside the mouth) was a Canker Sore. Myrh Tincture is very good, in fact Myrh is combined with Golden Seal Root in the manufacture of good quality Natural Toothpastes. Myrh works on the infection, I know this because I used this on my Mouth Ulcers (many times) and within a few applications they were gone pain free. Myrh is sold Over The Counter in many Pharmacies, as well as most Natural Food Stores.

You do not drink either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide when you use it in the mouth. You apply the carbamide or rinse with the hydrogen. The carbamide is a little easier to use because it is in gel form and it does taste better.

Dentists have been advocating rinsing the mouth with simple hydrogen peroxide for many years now.

    #702231

You don’t drink Tincture of Myrh. You put two or three drops on a Q Tip and swab the area of the Canker Sore. It stings for a few seconds I think because it is starting to work on the infection. Then the pain becomes anestheized and Chanker Sore starts to feel better.

You can also get a doc to prescribe a concotion of maalox, lidocaine and I think Benadryl. It supposedly works.

    #702233

My doctor advised dabbing Benadryle (a little on a clean fingertip) directly onto the canker sore a few times a day redoing after meals. There is also an over the counter liquid that you “paint” over the sore before eating for more comfort, lots of vitamin c is a good preventative. Refuah Shelamah

You can use Peroxyl -this has hydrogen peroxide in it, that the other posters mentioned, in a pleasant taste. You can swish with this a few times a day. You can also use Listerine. My advice with the Listerine is -instead of swishing with the whole thing (because it burns), put some on a Q-tip and dab the sore every couple of hours.

I read that Zinc Lozenges as well as Slippery Elm Lozenges (Must Be Kosher with a reliable hechtsher) can help heal with Hashems help the Canker Sore.

Iodine works too – put it directly on the canker sore with a Q-tip and try to hold your mouth open until it dries a little bit. Mine usually go away within a day or two when I do that.

Mouthwash- boy does it hurt, but then it gets numb.

I’ve also heard about applying a warm, wet teabag on the canker.

BTW- start concentrating if you get them after eating specific foods. I have a relative that stopped eating wheat after suffering from crazy canker sores and they stopped coming!

My son used to get a lot of canker sores when he was in Yeshiva. They are due to lack of leafy, green vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and a lack of vitamin C. Hydrogen Peroxide on a Q Tip several times a day helps. Also the chemist can make up some grecian violet which is also put on with a Q Tip. Also, to rinse your mouth with warm, salty water, a few times a day. It burns for a few moments, but the salt helps. Take a high dose of Vitamin C about 1500 mg which is timed release for a few days to build up your resistance. Refuah Shelamah!

I read that Canker Sores are a result of at least two possible things either a weakened Immune System or a wheat allergy. Zinc is a mineral that helps revitalize the Immune System. Spelt is a grain people eat as a substitute to Wheat.

    To best bubby,

You don’t need a chemist to make it up -I’ve seen it already packaged OTC in some pharmacies.

    To tamazaball,

If all these therapies don’t work, post it because I have a lot more treatments that I can let you know about.

Tamazaball -medicine is always practiced stepwise. If the weaker, OTC things don’t work, then you progress to the stronger things. I’m glad the OTC things are working in your case.

Moderator-80 thanks for correcting me that it is gentian violet! I don’t live in the USA anymore and where I am we can not get this OTC!

It would be interesting to start a thread on all homeopathic or other remedies for different ailments. I am new on this web and enjoy the CR and the different melding of opinions.

The Best Bubby- I am in agreement as far as a thread on alternative and natural remedies.

If you are a chronic sufferer you need to take multi vitamins. I was surprised but it makes the world of difference. Change your toothbrush!

Orajel and/or Canker-X work fine. Apply with a clean finger, or with a q-tip. There is nothing that really takes it away completely – all remedies temporarily relieve the pain. The canker sore is an ulcer, and it takes its due course until it disappears. While in some cases it may be due to hygiene, many people get it due to the ups and downs of their hormonal cycles. You just have to get lucky and hope the canker sore is not right on your tongue, or some place else which gets constant contact, translating into constant pain!

    To eelleerr,

You are wrong, if someone has ulcers that don’t go away with OTC products let them seek medical care -we have many options. But you are right that most of times they will go away by themselves or with the use of the OTC products. But if nothing seems to work seek medical care -we can help!

    #702254

Health- This is not so, as I wrote earlier Myrh Tincture dropped and swabbed on a Q Tip works. How do I know, because I have personally used it on Canker Sores and within a few applications the Mouth Ulcer was healed and gone. Zinc and Slippery Elm Lozzenges (must be Kosher) work as well. Pharmacies are not completely ethical when they sell Health products along with Tobbacco Products. OTC Products work but so do products sold in the Natural Food Store. The Rambam was a Master Herbalist who gathered and made remedies that worked. Health please visit a good Natural Food Store and look at all the products from Vitamin Supplements, Herbal, Aroma Therapy Whole Grain, Macrobiotic Products (believe it or not) that actually help heal with Hashems Bracha. If one has a Canker Sore that is not responding to being swabbed wth Myrh, then by all means one should promptly go for an examination from their Physcian.

    To yankdownunder,

What is not so? Did you get offended that I didn’t mention alternative therapies? I didn’t mention any alternative products because I personally don’t know any that work on canker sores. I don’t think someone has to try all or any of the natural products before they seek medical care.

Health I don’t have a guilty complex regarding regular medicine. I was resonding to what you wrote to eellerr that if Canker Sores do not respond to OTC Products one should seek immediate medical attention. Health I purchase products at Pharmacies, but I have a problem when I see Tobbacco Products also being sold in the same Pharmacy. Maybe I need to read the PDR. to find about the health warnings before using an OTC Product. The Natural Food Stores have a large assortment of Products that actually work. How do I know, because they have repeat customers who shop there including myself. The Health Food Stores are growing with the addition of new Stores to service the Public. Whatever I posted about things I recommend, these are things I have either personally used or researched with the purpose to help and heal people (with Hashems Blessing).

    To ydu,

I never wrote the word “immediate” no where in my post did I say not to use alternative medicines. a pharmacy is a business. They are trying to make a profit, not just sell things that are healthy or help cure you. They sell a lot of products nowadays, not just medicines; as opposed to health food stores which are specialty stores servicing a certain type of consumer. Also, you don’t need a PDR to find side effects on OTC products, they are right on the package.

Health I think you and I are on different pages regarding the subject of Health Care. What I do not understand as someone who received a Medical degree and whose source of parnossa is in the Health Field can justify the selling of Tobacco Products (the subject matter of other threads on YWN.) as being ok after all Pharmacies are just trying to make a profit Had you written on your post if you would like to look at the PDR. to see what the health warning or risks associating with using a particular Phameceutical Drug I would have respected your answer. However for myself as an informed consumer to purchase the Drug at face value whether it be an ointment or a tablet without checking out the source is pretty sad for me not to do so. Just Google Amazon Books on the Title the PDR of Prescription and Non Prescription Drugs (thank goodness there is at least one Title hopefully more). Health I know you are not a Phamacist, but I thought you would be ble to emphasize what I wrote. Not one bit this so why I think you and I are not on the same Page.

    To ydu,

I was never discussing the fact whether any store should sell tobacco products. If you feel that this should be illegal- lobby your legislators to make it illegal. What I was saying is that pharmacies are like any other store and they have the right to sell what they want. If you hold selling tobacco products is immoral, then this would apply to any store selling them, not just pharmacies.

Also, OTC products have all the drug info on the box; the books about drugs -like the Pill book for non-medical people are for prescription drugs.

I have been getting bad cancker sores my entire life and have tried everything. I started running on a tredmill several times a week since about a year ago. Since then I have got almost no canker sores

    #702261

ywso- Perhaps exercising on the treadmill helped improve your immune system. The healthier immune system (with Hashems Blessing)may have helped heal the Canker Sore.

Re the vitamins: I have had major problems with canker sores for years, and tried EVERYTHING on the market.

A few months ago, I got tested for vitamin deficiency and it turned out i was very very low in several vitamins (d, iron, b). Many frum girls are low in vitamin D and should definitely be tested. I started taking those vitamins i was low in and didn’t have canker sores for a few months.

Now I have them again… yoysh. I’ve been careless about taking vitamins.

I was just wondering… does anyone else find that they get more easily depressed when they have canker sores?

Pascha- this is too funny. I just wanted to search for this thread because lately I have so many canker sores. Now I have 3 of them.

Depressed you should never be. But I am definitely rotten! I can’t move my mouth and that puts any person into a bad mood.

I should try to take vitamins.

smartcookie: definitely take a multivitamin, but some people absorb different vitamins better in different forms. You could be deficient even if you take multivitamins, depending on your body’s needs. You should be tested to see what vitamins you are low in so you can focus on exactly what you need. It’s easy to ask your doctor to do the blood test, it’s not expensive and very important to your long-term health. (Also, Vit D for example, being low in your teens increases the risk of osteoporosis later – you want to correct that type of thing while you still can!)

There’s research that people with canker sores are especially low in B vitamins and I needed to take a b-complex vitamin in order to have enough. (They prescribed 50,000 iu of Vit D 1/week – I didn’t want to shock my body like that and figured with 800IU a day (twice the daily requirement) my body will catch up, and BH it worked.) However, everyone has different needs and just because it worked for me doesn’t mean it’s right for you.

Sorry for being so long but I know the terrible feeling of having canker sores. (Going thru it right now – no appetite whatsoever, except chocolate, once in my mouth it hurts too much to enjoy.) Canker sores are a sign that the body is worn out, you need to figure out what that trigger is (it could be low vitamins, stress, allergies, etc.) Feel better!

Pascha- I do take vitamin D supplements though I’m long past my teens!

I’m just wondering about what you said that canker sores are a sign that the body is worn out. Do you know this as a fact? Is it possible there’s some allergy that triggers it?

Because I only started having them in the past year but I’m not exceptionally stressed. Maybe just very very tired!

Canker sores can be caused by a lot of different things. Vitamins can be a major factor, but they’re not the only one. I’ve read just about everything on the topic, and it seems to occur after different stresses. Hormonal fluctuations can also cause it – I know mine started when I was 12 and they are way more common in women.

If you only just started getting them than you should look at what you’ve changed in your life – new foods, a job, less exercise, new worries. You could be vitamin deficient but I would think it’s unlikely if you just started getting them and have been eating the same diet for years.

Are you familiar with the term “doctor”? they are people who practice medicine… maybe you can consult one of them rather than the experts in the coffe room. C’mon!!!

People who suffer from canker sores should be using a toothpaste that does NOT contain sodium laurel sulfate – the agent that causes toothpaste (and many other products) to foam. There is only one toothpaste on the market without SLS and I cannot think of the name of it at the moment. Shall post it when I can. This information was given to me either by my doctor or my dentist – I can’t remember now.

If you get multiple canker sores often, it is possible that they are not “canker sores” but rather a virus. My friend had a very bad outbreak of sores and the doctor said that the same virus that caused her chicken pox as a kid had resurfaced in her system and came out as mouth sores. A prescription medication got rid of the sores, but every once in a while they still come out. She told me that she can tell when a sore is about to come out and she gargles with listerine to catch it before it does. (She said only brand name listerine works for her).
