What is “cholent mix”? I see it listed in recipes for cholent, but can’t find a description of exactly what’s in it. If you don’t have “cholent mix”, how would you create an equivalent from basic ingredients?
November 30, 2017 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm #1416510MenoParticipantThe โchulent mixโ that I buy is just a mix of beans. You can just use whatever beans you like, the proportions are not too important.
November 30, 2017 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #1416533iacisrmmaParticipantCholent mix, as Meno described is just a mixture of beans so you don’t have to buy different bags of beans and make your own mixture (as was done years ago). Mostly kidney beans, navy beans and pinto beans.

November 30, 2017 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm #1416546LightbriteParticipantAhoy…. Cholent mix is indeed a class of its own!
Found this one online for a grand total of $1.69
Example:
HANAMAL CHOLENT MIX 500GRDescription:
Cholent (chamin) bean mix….looks like a bag of mixed beans (Kidney, Navy, and maybe others)… no seasonings or anything added here.

December 1, 2017 11:00 am at 11:00 am #1416817MenoParticipantI don’t mix my cholent.
I just put all the ingredients in the pot and let it do its thing.

I turn the fire on too. This way it cooks.
December 2, 2017 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #1417025MammeleParticipantIt also includes cranberry beans, but feel free to use whatever beans you like.
December 2, 2017 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #1417047DovidBTParticipantPost-shabbos report: my cholent came out perfect. ๐
I used a mixture of navy, kidney, pinto and black beans, along with potatoes, barley, stew beef, onions, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika and hot sauce (and water).

It is very easy to make a healthy chulent that tastes better than any recipe from the alte heim but equally important, allows you to fulfill the mitzvah of “u’shamartem es nafshosechem”.

December 3, 2017 1:34 am at 1:34 am #1417115๐RebYidd23ParticipantGadholhadorah, eating tofu may be healthier and prolong your life, but if you spend that time eating tofu you’re just prolonging your misery.
December 3, 2017 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm #1417482LightbriteParticipantIf your Venus fly trap wants to eat it, then you’ve made cholent.
