YWN been asked to start a new forum where people can post any computer issues that they are having, and have someone give them advise on how to fix the problem.

Some conversations that took place between Help Desk technicians and callers with a `problem’.

A caller to the Help Desk said the instructions he was reading said to “Press any key”. He asked the desk, “Which key is the `any’ key?”

A caller complained that her new computer wouldn’t work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked: “what power switch?”

An exasperated caller couldn’t get her new computer to turn on. After confirming that the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button.

Her response: “I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happens.” The foot pedal turned out to be the computer’s mouse.

A caller complained that “her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on”. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in.

A customer called to say that he couldn’t get his computer to fax anything.

After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the send key.

A call came in from a man complaining that the system wouldn’t read word processing files from his old diskettes. After trouble-shooting for magnets and heat, he failed to diagnose the problem.

It was found that the customer labeled the diskettes and then rolled them into the typewriter to type his labels.

The Help Desk asked a caller to send them a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with Xeroxed copies of the floppies.

Customer: “Hello, can you help me? The cup holder of my computer broke off”.

Help Desk: “Did you say upholder?”

Customer: “Yes, it’s on the front of my computer. It’s to put on your drinks. It broke off”.

Help Desk: “Was that upholder on your computer when you bought it or did you buy it later?”

Customer: “No. It was on my computer when I bought it. The name on it is 4X”.

At this point the Help Desk operator began to laugh. He realized that the caller was putting his coffee cup in the CD-ROM drive.

Great idea. Some of us (including photographers..) are expert programmers etc.

    Joseph,

    LOL! Literally.

    That is hysterical!

The cup holder one is the cutest

BTW, I think this topic should have things entered in the soonest because when you need help on a computer you need it NOW!

    Thanks!

actually, even if there are computer experts here this is a pretty inefficient forum to get help

it can take many hours sometimes before new messages get posted, sometimes days.

you need to have faster communication to work through a computer problem, usually.

Editor, Another good idea would be to add more than 20 threads on the main coffee room page, since there are now just about more than 20 active discussions, and some get “lost” (you have todig it out) and it loses comments. I’d suggest maybe 30 threads on the main coffee room page.

Editor: How ’bout fixing the link to change your screen name or password. It used to work, but now it says its unavailable.

    #621972

    feivel,

normally I’d agree with you but today the posts are showing up very quickly. Great job, editor. (With my luck this post won’t be visible for 4 days, lol.)

Also mazel tov to the editor on hitting 5,000 posts today in the coffee room. Please don’t anyone ask why I noticed that. 😉 May you continue to have hatzlacha with this site

Editor: Another suggestion – Show the date & time on posts in the Coffee Room rather than jusr “X days ago” or “X hours ago”

Btw, the suggestions above haven’t been implemented yet (like adding another 10 threads on the main coffee room page, like you said above you would.)

Feivel, I thought you meant photography was your profession (rather than hobby)…

Btw what neck of the woods do you reside in?

    Editor, Thank You!

Any chance of getting the timestamp with data/time instead of # of days ago?

I also see someone mentioned above the change screen name/password link is out of service.

(If you click “Update Login Information” after logging into the main YW site, it says “You are not allowed to do this here”. It used to take you to the screen to change your screen name/password.)

feivel, I don’t read dpreview usually. I’d suggest going to techsupportforum.com very good experiences there. But lemaisa, yeshivish tech advise is de beste zach!

Agav, I had a problem with my mic recently o my Dell 1505 with SigmaTel audio card. I finally got this worked out yesterday. It was like this, whenever you plug in the mic a window pops up asking which action to take. I checked the box; don’t ask again. Since then mic didn’t work. Bekitzur you have to go to control panel> SigmaTel Audio> check box ‘allow reconfiguration pop ups’ Finally, it works!

    Gtg, Hatzlacha!

I agree about the date and time. It’s easier to see if things changed because you don’t remember how long ago you checked and it said “…5 hours ago…” so hey, is that 7 hours now…? 😀

I sure hope you weren’t the photographer by your own childrens chasuna’s. I presume none of these are self-portraits… Are they all mishpacha?
