Is there a correlation between wealth and happiness? Do lower middle class people tend to be a bit less happy than wealthy people?

You can be happy and wealthy or happy and poor. Happiness is not a happening.

But the question at hand is whether increased wealth increases happiness.

In most cases, wealth is an addiction; you cannot get enough of it to satisfy and cannot, as a result, be happy.

There is certain satisfaction of having cash flow and paying all your bills. Happiness is taking/seeking pleasure in the pleasures that you have.

A lower middle class family, too, can have a cash flow to cover their bills. They need to keep their bills lower and refrain from purchasing larger ticket items that a wealthy family can afford but they cannot. A poor family can, too, take pleasure in the pleasures that they have.

There is a very positive correlation, once you control for the lifestyle cost of becoming wealthy, the types of personalities that might want to live that lifestyle because they so need to become wealthy, and the types of psychological disorders you might have by growing up wealthy.

I volunteer to be in the study, though not in the control group.

I never had financial wealth, so I cannot say for certain whether or not it brings happiness. But I can state with certitude, that NOT having money to pay one’s bills for non-luxuries, definitely brings UNhappiness. That said, money cannot buy menschlechkeit, class, and good middos, and these are way more important than the the things it CAN buy,

There was an excellent Time cover story about this in July 2013. I can’t post the link, but if you want to look it up the title of the article is The Pursuit of Happiness.

Oomis, somehow the bills get/got paid, so its only the fear caused by uncertainty that “brings uphappiness”. But all that worry is for naught because we are all still around; fed, with family and a roof over our heads. As the g’mara says: it’s better to be pursued than the pursuer.

Depends on who is doing the pursuing.

    1. I believe I would be happier with more money even though I am not lacking today.

    2. I believe I would not be happier with more money as I am not lacking today.

Once you reach the point where you have too much money to know what to do with it, adding more makes you less and less happy.

I hate to sound like a philosopher here but happiness is totally the wrong word. Money can bring u pleasure and not having money can bring stress but neither one can make a person happy or unhappy. Happiness is a feeling of emotional peace and tranquility, serenity if u will, a feeling of acceptance of everything and anything that u have, and its not easy to REALLY be happy! eg; small children aren’t happy they are in a state of pleasure when that runs out they cry… same with money its not the cause of happiness it def makes u “pleasured” while u have it but dont mistake that for happiness bec if god forbid anything really bad happens to u in life u won’t be equipt to handle it and all ur “happiness” will go right out the window and even if ur a billionaire it won’t make u feel any better…
