the mishna berura says you can make up your own things that sound like other things. For example yogurt is gut yohr, banana is bon anne, raisins and celery for rise in salary etc etc. There are more, cant think of them at the moment. Can you?

Cashews are nuts so one should avoid them on Rosh Hashanah.

I’ve heard of cutting a pear in half to “find the other half of your pair”.

Dates seem like a bad siman b/c dating sucks; getting married is the ikkar.

I mean, of course, Dates for dating. Dates is i siman for having enemies destroyed, so that’s great.

WIY: Only Egoz has the Gematria of Cheit. So not all nuts. Only walnuts, hazelnuts, and anything else that can legitimately be called an Egoz. Peanuts, for example, are fine. I don’t know if cashews fall under the catogry of “Egoz”.

Someone asked my if they should get a sheep head. I told them to get a lamb chop and say “yehi ratzon that we should be a rib and not a tail).

Yeast and shoe polish: May we rise and shine!

Graham Crackers: May we lose weight, gram by gram!

Venison: May we be written in the buck of good life!

Fruity Pebbles: May this year rock!

Squash: May our enemies by squashed!

Sesame Paste & Blimp Rubber: May we Halvah Goodyear!

(I made those up myself, last year)

TMM: You ate shoe polish and blimp rubber? Something tells mean that’s a great Siman for a quick trip to the hospital.

The sefer Seuda Secrets by Rabbi D. Meisels has some interesting stuff about this. (It is a chassidishe sefer).

E.g., Belz does not eat apple dipped in honey, because apparently there are opinions that the honey is not tofel and perhaps would require a bracha, and to avoid the shaila, they refrain from eating it altogether.

I’ve been told to eat dates so that I would have a lot of dates (or maybe not a lot – just good ones). I was at my best friend’s house the Rosh Hashana after I was told that, and I wanted to eat a date, but I was too scared of bugs. She was even more nervous about bugs than I was, but she ate one in my zchus since I didn’t want to. Is that a good friend or what!!!

(Now, I’m waiting for all the comments about how irrational it is both to eat dates for a segula and to be scared of eating dates because of bugs and to let your friend do it for you because you are too scared to do it yourself…)

Rav Moshe Heineman SHLITA of the Star K has a minhag to eat half a raisin and a piece of celery to “have a raise in salary”.

Ironic, since both of those have tolaim issues.

    Raisins have tolaim issues?

    I don’t know.

The cRc says: “RAISINS. Acceptable Without Certification. All domestic are acceptable even without a hechsher. Does not need to be checked for insect infestation”

    StarK: Raisins. no checking required.

ChofK doesn’t mention checking. Just that they should be stored in a closed container.

“Ironic, since both of those have tolaim issues.”

So, it is also a segula to work out the bugs.

Yes, raisins have been an issue with infestation.

    Celery has leaf miners.

Why do the words “cute” & “funny” attached to the words “simanim for Rosh Hashana” make me feel uncomfortable?

And am I the only one?

Wishing all my fellow CR’niks enjoyment and Hatzlacha preparing for the upcoming Yom Tov!

My friend Gimpel eats lettuce, half a raisin & celery while sitting on the floor under the table because he says, “Let us have a raise in salary- In Cash!”

Just throw everything together in a blender and make a “Simanim Smoothie” (patent pending)…

Maybe we could get someone in the CR to write up a general Yehi Ratzon to cover everything

Everyone is talking about dates….can someone think of something for bishows

Happygirlygirl – I think a bishow can be considered a type of date. It’s not that different from a sit-in date. I actually have done a few of those.
