I think it is much more tznius since the guy and woman are not alone in the car for a couple hours (round trip.)

Aside from that, I don’t think that between driving or being driven by a car service, one is better than the other.

Next thing she’ll tell you is that this guy is great and everything about him is awesome, and he even took his road test and passed it on the first go, he’s from a great family, learns well, has wonderful middos but she isn’t attracted to him. Brace yourself. Consider yourself warned…

Not sure what the question is. Would it be better for him to pick her up on a bicycle?

Most people who do go out on dates drive themselves. Was wondering if anyone else finds it interesting to go by car service as opposed to the boy doing the driving.

So, is a driver’s license and ownership of (or access to) a car now a prerequisite for getting married?

Otherwise, what would you recommend that people without driver’s licenses or cars do?

This is what happens when parents are retarded babies and don’t teach their teenage kids to drive. The sons graduate high school, go off to yeshiva, go to Israel, come back and start dating and don’t know how to drive.

    #937720

Or when yeshivas pass rules against bachurim driving because it’s inevitable that the first thing they’d do is drive to a girl. You reap what you sow, I guess. Now he can’t drive to a girl.

Aha so it’s not the age gap we have finally found the problem!

In my single days, I took dates on the subway. I knew how to drive, but I didn’t own a car. Is esteer suggesting that I should have rented a car every time I went on a date?

I personally believe that nowadays allowing a boy to learn to drive is included in the gemara in Kidushin ???? ????? ?????? (a father has the duty to teach his son a trade. The gemara includes teaching his son life skills – i.e how to swim, in case he is caught in a storm whilst at sea.)

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

In brooklyn, no chance that works. Out of towners or maybe someone from manhattan might be more open to that idea

I’ll probably get yelled at for this but I would find it pretty strange and nerdy.

yaff80, interesting thought. But I agree that it would only apply in a place where it’s truly necessary.

    #937727

thats why we need bushos!! (sit ins) the chassidim dont have a crisis because they do sit ins no shayches to the age gap!! and horse and buggy used to be in style!! mazel tov to all the people who got married before cars were invented!!

yaff80- i’ve heard (though can’t remember who said it) that in today’s day, the inyan of teaching your kids to swim is to teach them to drive properly.

It’s a good idea to learn to drive in high school in case there’s an emergency, but it’s not a good idea for teenagers to drive too much. Studies show that teens have worse judgment than adults and are much more likely to die in car accidents.

In Israel, the rate of traffic fatalities per mile driven is slightly higher than in the US, but the overall traffic fatality rate (per person) is much lower, because people don’t have to drive as much. The murder rate is also much lower, about half of what it is in the US, and life expectancy is higher. For these reasons, one is actually safer to live in Israel, despite the occasional terrorism and wars. The less driving people do in everyday life, the better. Maybe they could just have a Skype date instead? Just kidding.

SaysMe: I hope no one takes that to mean they don’t have to teach their kids to swim. It’s very important. I saw in the news fairly recently that several teenagers drowned, ironically while they were trying to save someone else who was drowning. None of them ever learned how to swim.

    I took car services.

i had just gotten my license but wasnt comfortable in brooklyn(BP) with all the traffic and offensive driving so took a cab to solve the problem!

I told the girl before and I dont think she saw anything wrong with it!

Cars are expensive- 4-5 dollars a gallon for gas, insurance (very high for young men), inspection, cost of a car, parking, etc. cost a fortune.

At least they didn’t go on a train or bus; in NYC, any decent woman would have no problem using our public transportation system.

Any one that does is still a girl and should grow up before even thinking about marrying, taking care of a man, raising his children, etc.

Car services are expensive, the girl should offer to dribe or take public transit.

    #937733

why dont i think this is such a bad idea?

if the boy doesnt feel comfortable driving, the girl shudnt put him under more pressure durnig the date by insisting he drive. THere cud be countless reasons why he x wanna/or cant drive.

I think its fine for them to take a cab-just make sure the girl knows before cuz otherwise its weird.
