We had here quite disparaging opinions about “kiruv” with Jews who are intermarried, asserting that one should just tell them to divorce first.
R Chaim Mintz asked R Moshe about a new baal teshuva in this situation – should he already inform him that he should divorce. R Moshe suggested not to.
for 2 reasons:
1) he is not ready for that, so it will not lead to the desired outcome and push him away.
2) there is hope that his wife will want to misgayer. If you tell them that they have to divorce right now, then the giyur will be questionable as she’ll presumably do it to keep her husband. But you give her some time, maybe she will be interested in the giyur without pressure and that will be a kosher giyur.First reason is obvious. But I never heard the second one and it is a great sevorah, if I may dare to compliment a gadol …

all rav moshe said is that this nebach wouldn’t be mekabel the tochuchuh.
That also would mean that r mintz doesn’t have any arvis towards him and should hate him for being a rushe, he stay away from him so he doesn’t learn from his bad ways, but also be nice to him because, as the chazon ish said, “since we can’t kill ’em, we’re stuck being nice to them”
July 7, 2026 12:37 pm at 12:37 pm #2571732Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantsomejew, a truly unexpected comment.
R Mintz was/is involved in kiruv and had this particular question to R Moshe. What makes you put your words into Rav’s mouth instead of trying to learn from him. Maybe you posted in a wrong thread.

July 7, 2026 12:37 pm at 12:37 pm #2571861The little I knowParticipantAll respect due to Rav Moshe ZT”L and lhbchl”ch Rav Mintz. An issue, often misunderstood by many, is the limits and constraints of the mitzvah of tochacha. We tend to see it as rebuking people who have sinned. Actually, that is NOT the mitzvah. The mitzvah is all about intervening to stop someone from committing an aveiro, and its place is before the sin, not after. The baalei mussar weigh in on this, with guidelines as to how to perform this and when not to. For example, the Mesilas Yeshorim (Perek 20) openly states that it is applicable only when the person is likely to accept the tochacha. If not, the mitzvah is to be silent. And Chazal say that a proper mochiach is hard to find.
I’m not a posek. It seems clear that the reference here is about a new baal teshuvah who is likely not ready to give up his marriage. Following the MY, the correct approach is to refrain from tochacha.
It is critical to repeat an oft ignored basic concept. What we call tochacha is about preventing aveiros, not rebuking or punishing after they have been committed. There is an aspect of chinuch, educating someone who has sinned. That is NOT tochacha. It is education. And a talmid must be receptive in order for this to be effective. One who is not ready should not be given useless education, even if the subject matter is Torah.
July 7, 2026 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #2572165Yaakov Yosef AParticipantnevuah – What is sinful about marrying your 8th cousin? Or your first cousin for that matter?
July 7, 2026 6:24 pm at 6:24 pm #2572157Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantTLIK, right, the goal is to affect this person’s actions, but maybe also to call the person to teshuvah. Did Navi Natan came to David because he was worrying about David’s future wives or to realize what he did wrong?
But you are right in the main thing – the goal is to have a positive effect, and you have to be attentive to the person’s psychological state. As Chofetz Chaim said – in our times, many people say: you have to be frum, frum, and then klug (ie be machmir as much as you can before even starting to think for yourself). I am saying – klug, klug, and then frum.

anyway, I presume this is about “reshoyim”; I have no idea how this is relevant to the baal teshuva discussed by R Mintz.
btw, most interesting for me in the teshuva was not the suggestion to not tell the person what he is not ready to accept, this is not news –
but I don’t think I heard the idea that by not telling them now, this might be a path to a kosher giyur without pressure. Very bold idea.July 8, 2026 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm #2572459GadolHadofiParticipantsomejerk,
How dare you mention the names of R. Moshe, zt”l and R. Mintz, shlita,, prime examples of Gedolim who love every Jew. You scum would have been thrilled to run the gas chambers in Auschwitz and will suffer the fate of all traitors.
July 8, 2026 4:44 pm at 4:44 pm #2572616ujmParticipantTLIK: Everyone is obligated per halacha to give tochacha when necessary.
The requirements to give Tochachah are:
1) You have to first assess that there is at least a reasonable possibility of the person listening to you. (Sometimes there are Halachic ways of assessing this.)
2) You have to give the Tochachah in a non-aggressive manner, and never in front of people.
3) You have to make the person understand that the only reason you are giving him the Tochachah is because you care about him, and it is for his good, so that he can get Olam Habah.
It also says in Sefer HaChinuch perek 239 that you should give someone tochacha privately and in a nice way; but if they don’t listen to you, then you should embarrass them in public so that they will do teshuvah.

I was saying, there really is no reason for the commenters to get heated by your post, it really is simple logic what you posted, but as it is a situation which would make a difficult she’ela, that is why we have Gedolim, which is what is behind R’ Moshe’s psak, and from my knowledge- the psak of basically every Rav/Posek that deals with these situations.
In short, TAFASTA MERUBAH LO TAFASTA, you are trying to get the guy to run before he can walk, if you try and get him to divorce before he’s properly STABELY and steadfast in his yiddishkeit, it could backfire….

Your first cousin is your parents siblings child, so er how is that different from incest? second anytime you marry someone within the same bloodline, it has biological reprecuasions, spiritual reprecussions, and also dismorphed physical structure and facial structure. You’ll start to seeJuly 9, 2026 12:24 pm at 12:24 pm #2572801Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantSeveral people mentioned halochos tochachah, which is a great topic is surely applicable to the posters here.
I don’t think though that people dealing with baalei teshuva in the modern meaning of the word are discussing tochacha, but rather education and raising up of tinokos shenishba. Maybe some of you are for some reason do not differentiate between these two catetgories, but then your derech and derech of R Moshe are different ones.

July 9, 2026 12:25 pm at 12:25 pm #2572967Yaakov Yosef AParticipantsomejew – Actually, that Chazon Ish is the biggest proof against most of what you are trying to say. The Chazon Ish isn’t saying that because of the הסתר פנים we aren’t ABLE to do מורידין וכו׳, but that due to the הסתר פנים there is greater לימוד זכות on “sinners” (who usually anyway don’t know what they are doing Jewishly, which is another famous Chazon Ish you don’t like… But it exists.) At a time when there was a much higher level of התגלות אלקות and Kedusha in Klal Yisroel, if some meshigina rasha merusha would go and do A B C then he would incur much more severe מידת הדין than some nebbech who grew up in Tel Aviv and maybe his elter Zeide still kept something. That doesn’t mean we should hang around with these people stam azoi, or “integrate” into secular Israeli society chas veshalom, but from there until מורידין is a long way. And before you hock me about how secular Israelis really do know about Torah and Mitzvos and they aren’t תינוק שנשבה, it really isn’t so pashut. Someone born and raised with a completely secular chinuch and brainwashed against anything Jewish/Chareidi really isn’t a full fledged בעל בחירה on things that to you and me are self understood. How exactly to deal with different situations and interactions with them requires guidance from Gedolei Yisroel, but to write them out of Klal Yisroel is something else entirely.

Because we have a list of relatives assur to marry, found in Chumash at the end of Achrei Mos. The Gemara in Yevamos adds a few issurim d’rabbonon. Cousins (let alone 8th cousins!) are not on either list. Whether it is a good idea or not in any given situation is different, but it isn’t assur or “immoral”, and it has definitely been done by ehrlich people.
July 10, 2026 9:25 am at 9:25 am #2573239Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantYYA, thanks for interesting discussion of Chazon Ish, but not that someperson shifted discussion from helping someone doing teshuvah to how to deal with reshayim.
Maybe, there is a difference here between Israeli and US contexts. I see 2 differences:
1) in Israel everyone is in the same boat, interact and depend on each other. Due to partially socialist economy, different group compete for government money and it all matters and people focus on those differences. In US, you need to go to some federation meetings to meet non-observant people.2) fry people in Israel are secure in their level of Yehadut. They can go up, but they can’t easily go down. In US, non-observant Jews disappear rapidly. This is what R Soloveitchik was telling Mizrachi – Jews in Israel are not going anywhere, but pay attention to saving American Jews thru education.
So, based on that, Israeli poskim would see their counterparts as “reshayim” – especially early on, and American have more rachmonus – as R Mintz working for decades looking how to help those Yidden.
July 10, 2026 2:48 pm at 2:48 pm #2573371Yaakov Yosef AParticipantAAQ – To make a long story short:
1. That is on the political/public level. The stuff you see in the news. On the interpersonal level (which is where real kiruv happens) the reality is radically different. I see less day-to-day hostility in my (daily) interaction with “secular” Israelis than I see right here in the comments on YWN by “Frum” Americans.
2. You only cited one (beautiful) anecdote that happened in America decades ago, so I’m not sure what that has to do with the general approach to kiruv, here or there, then or now. There is a world of difference between dealing with the secular Israeli government (not really even the government itself anymore so much as the judiciary junta that has become the de-facto government) and dealing with individuals. Practically speaking, in Israel it is exponentially less common for an aspiring Baal Teshuvah to be married to a non-Jew. There are other issues that the poskim and kiruv people know how to deal with as needed.
July 10, 2026 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #2573372nevuahParticipantAgain your missing the point of what it says
It first says “don’t marry close kin”
That should apply to first cousins. As that’s close kin.
And then it says don’t marry your uncle, marrying your cousin is marrying your uncles kid….so um…..
Second just because things aren’t “spelled out for you” doesn’t mean you should be stupid and play dumbJuly 10, 2026 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #2573378nevuahParticipantIt’s still the same bloodline. Even if your marrying your 8th cousin it’s still the same bloodline which directly relates that person somewhere to your direct family line. Why would you want to do that exactly?
July 10, 2026 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #2573398[email protected]Participantyou are inventing “rachmonus” on secular people, something that is forbidden by Torah for anyone who either acts secular (not keeping most mitzvos publicly), doesn’t keep shabbos publicly, or not believing in ikarei eminah.
such a person, regardless of tochucheh, hatrueh, or any o’nes (like tinik shenishbu), it is forbidden to have rachmunos on or to be dan lekaf zchis, rather they are chayev “mordin v’lo maalin”.this is in contrast to the colloquial “tinik shenishbu” of karoyim (todays “modern orthodox”) where their kefira is specifically because of corrupted oral tradition, and exception the Rambam famously made from his otherwise normative red-line of the other 12 of 13 ikarim. Those, one would need to check if their mistaken psak stems from fraudulent “rabbis” that they follow innocently or from an ideology of rejection of Chazal. One checks by simply informing them and seeing if they indeed correct their mistaken ways or if they continue down the path of heresy. If they are the former, they deserve much rachmonus.
July 10, 2026 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm #2573415nevuahParticipantThere are always reprecussions to marrying into the same bloodlines. Doesn’t matter how “far off” it is. So I’m not sure why anyon would condone/justify/explain it away
July 12, 2026 9:46 am at 9:46 am #2573593Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantYYA> see less day-to-day hostility in my (daily) interaction with “secular” Israelis than I see right here in the comments on YWN by “Frum” Americans.
I thought so too, but you are reading my words backwards: I was concerned how charedim see the chilonim or even any non-charedi, to include other observant Jews, as were discussing how some israel-based posters are more hostile to ‘”others” than their US counterparts. Someone who lives in Lakewood or Monsey is not encountering reformim or socialistim in their life. Tell me that I am wrong, but my impression is that attitudes expressed here are representative of a large group of people.
But to your point, I understand that beyond small hardcore group of anti-religious secular, there is a large group of those who are indifferent and maybe apprehensive to something they do not relate to; and also a group of masorti who are not hostile at all. Some anecdote to illustrate this: I had an Israeli professor, mildly left-wing, who said that when his older son was growing up and starting mocking datiim as kids around him, he told him – this is a serious matter, if you want to have an opinion, you should learn what you are talking about. The son went took some classes, and stopped eating at his father’s house … ok, can happen with anyone! BUT when his second son grew up, he had integrity to advise him the same with the same outcome. In US, professor tried to become a member of a “modern” beit knesset. They refused his membership as he was not shomer shabbat, and he respected that. All of this is unheard of in America – he would be crying discrimination and opening his own shul.

What is best information if not a verified maaseh of talkmid chochom. With the attitude above, we would dismiss most of the gemorah. I don’t think you thought it through!
I did not really think that rochmus towards the person is such a chiddush, it is just a nature of online forums to try to contradict anything posted that some exhibit. I found interesting the idea of keeping them in the dark in order to facilitate a sincere gerus. Maybe we have the source for this in the idea of not telling people about midrabanans if we think they are not going to listen (like eating erev yom kippur), but R Moshe is taking it way further. Parenthetically, I mentioned some of this to a person who learnt from R Soloveitchik in his youth (and who is not at all modern himself). He said: we went to R Soloveitchik for lomdus; for kulos you go to R Feinstein, and this is one of those …
July 12, 2026 9:46 am at 9:46 am #2573600Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantnevuah> Even if your marrying your 8th cousin it’s still the same bloodline
There is no real problem marrying 8th cousin. Everyone is everyone’s Nth cousin.
The problem is – repeated marriages within the same close population. That is, 8 generations of marrying 8th cousin makes people for way close genetically. And you are right, even as Torah does not forbid those marriages, there are known genetic problems – and religious communities accepted that testing for such problems is appropriate. And, maybe, tests do not pick up all the problems.
Of course, a bigger problem is that all Ashkenazim are 8th cousins to each other for last 1000 years. So, if you want to avoid these problems, you need to marry a sephardi or a ger. Of course, Ashkenazim have 10 IQ point advantage on average (which accounts for viciousness of the discussions here!), so you’ll be diluting that advantage!

of course, and this is what R Soloveitchik was telling Mizrachi in 1940s/50s – Israeli Jews will be fine eventually, have emunah, but American Jews are more in need of urgent help.
July 12, 2026 9:46 am at 9:46 am #2573601Always_Ask_QuestionsParticipantsome> such a person, regardless of tochucheh, hatrueh, or any o’nes (like tinik shenishbu), it is forbidden to have rachmunos on or to be dan lekaf zchis
Look, there is no reason to have an argument between you and me. We can’t convince each other. I brought you evidence from R Moshe, who clearly had this rachmonus. So did R Ruderman from other evidence from the same sefer. And there are way more. So, to have a productive argument, please bring where R Moshe has an opinion aligning with you, and then we can discuss how we understand the differences.
> Those, one would need to check if their mistaken psak stems from fraudulent “rabbis” that they follow innocently or from an ideology of rejection of Chazal. … informing them and seeing if they indeed correct their mistaken ways
So, please read R Soloveitchik and inform me where he is incorrect. And note that he clearly had differences with his cousin R Moshe, but they were not calling each other “frauds” and had love and respect for each other. Again, please explain how you can call someone fraud when R Moshe did not
July 12, 2026 9:11 pm at 9:11 pm #2573817Yaakov Yosef AParticipantAAQ – Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough. I wasn’t dismissing the veracity of the story you posted. My point was that there is a difference between public statements or things printed in seforim etc. as opposed to case-by-case personal guidance. The latter is where these types of “kulos” can and do come into play, in Israel too. But one needs “breite plaitzes” to do that, so poskim don’t publicize these things in the public domain to prevent every “Tom Dick and Harry” from copying them inappropriately. The fact that you happened to hear one such story about Reb Moshe zt”l doesn’t mean that there weren’t many such stories by Rav Ovadia zt”l, Reb Shlomo Zalman zt”l, and Reb Nissim Karelitz zt”l (just listing three Israeli poskim I heard similar stories about “shocking” kulos WRT kiruv.)
WRT Rav Soloveitchik, that is one of the main reasons he never wanted to move to Israel despite various offers.
WRT Chareidi-secular relations in real daily life: As I have repeatedly pointed out, the reality on the ground isn’t anything close to what you read online. News is all about “man bit dog”, “clickbait”, and related garbage. When Chareidim and non-Chareidim are nice to each other you don’t see it in the headlines. The truth is that the vast majority of Israelis despise the AG and Supreme Court for their divisiveness and hate-mongering, but there is a small and disproportionately powerful group backing them.
July 12, 2026 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #2573897nevuahParticipantLol your right About intellegance but I think it has more to do with eating kosher and keeping shabbas then genetics but maybe I’m wrong
July 12, 2026 9:12 pm at 9:12 pm #2573898nevuahParticipantThe Torah does allow for men to take wives from other nations but we got too technical, so we can blame ourselves for this genetic bottleneck. It’s our own sins that causes more sins. But ok. It shouldn’t be something to condone.
