I was in a dept of social services when my phone suddenly caught on what must have been their WiFi because without having connection it suddenly started beeping and chirping with updates. ….since then I’ve been nervous all day wondering if and why they would offer free WiFi? ??? unless it’s a conspiracy to see what I’ve got cooking in mt personal information and data.

could someone enlightened please tell me if this is a possibility?

    Thanks

Maybe they do it to lure people into taking out their expensive phones to make them look weird in such a place.

it wasn’t a welfare office! more like a federal investigation

your phone was probably set to automatically join any unlocked wifi network

I am pretty sure the only information you could possibly be giving away by using WiFi is your IP address (maybe). Besides, why would you automatically assume that it must be a conspiracy? See klein vikayam’s excellent point above.

Yes, open networks pose security risks and it is oft recommended not to join them unless you have a VPN. Generally speaking, anyone who wants to gather information from a public WiFi can do so without too much effort – but chances are you don’t have too much to worry about.

jf02: An IP address is something that is established by a network and not something that is inherent to your computer.
