I don’t drink. I know that makes me an apikorus in some circles, but so be it.

I really enjoy when my children go looking to keep score on who are the sloppy drunks in the community.

It is also a great source of nachas to hear their reports of their own rebbes setting this example, but it is ok when you are REALLY frum and as long as it is in the merit of Simchas Torah…

Oh and before I get slammed I am being 100% facetious and I don’t believe it has to be all or nothing, I kinda like moderation, unless of course one has a substance abuse problem.

Bygirl… just out of curiosity, why do you think drinking on Simchas Torah is wrong… provided it’s done responsibly*?

    The Wolf

(* Yes, I know it’s not always like that in the real world — but your post made it sound like it’s wrong altogether.)

If I may interject, why should Simchas Torah be different from any other day?

Are we to refrain from drinking alcohol on this particular day in order to show that our simcha is really coming from learning Torah? Are we afraid that by drinking, it might show that our simcha really has nothing to do with Torah at all, and therefore we should avoid it?

If not (and I have never heard anyone say that this is the case), then Simchas Torah should be no different from any other day of the year (except Purim) when it comes to drinking.

All you bochrim out there are not going to like this post but maybe someone can come up with a solution for this drinking on Simchat Torah problem. Ive rarely seen “Responsible Drinking”. What ive seen is bochrim drinking getting drunk and then dancing with Sefer Torah!!!! Who gives a drunk guy a Sefer Torah?? But ive seen it in so many shuls. Then they throw up all over the shul and they knock over little kids its so out of control. And isnt drinking a Mitzvah on Purim? Correct me if im wrong but i dont know anywhere that it says drinking on Simchat Torah is a Mitzvah. Before you all go crazy on me im not against drinking but its a Yom Tov. How can we do it in a responsible way?

Yuck! Personally, I do not enjoy the smell of most alcoholic beverages and I do not enjoy the taste of most alcoholic beverages. Can someone really say that bourbon tastes good? I think men do it to feel “high” and “be manly”. (Whatever that is!)

That being said, IMHO, I think that there is nothing wrong with drinking a l’chaim on Simchas Torah (or on any Shabbos for that matter), as long as it is limited. (Again, my opinion: one or two drinks.) If you know that you can not limit yourself, then you should not drink it at all!

i’m with best ima on this one. and it seem like the lesson/middos we are trying to teach conflicy with the behaviors that we allow. bh my kids are too young for this i have some time to think about it but for other parents it’s real, i once witnessed a drunk boy try to cross ocean parkway baruch hashem some guys saw him and directed him to safety but something just doesnt feel right about the whole thing.

because it makes a mess on the floor when thrown over the mechitza. Or, it ruins someone’s dress.

To drink one l’chaim, yes, I can see that. The problem is that too many guys think they need a few do-overs in case they didn’t get the right touch of “chaim” the first time.

There are few worse example for our children to see than to witness a sloppy drunk Yid in shul.

And noch di tzi, to claim it shows love of Torah…

You know, most things are this way – meaning, in moderation or in controlled circumstances it is fine, but if you choose to abuse it, it can be very bad.

This can apply to alcohol, food, candy, fire, the internet, water, exercise…Almost anything at all!

In other words, a little seichel goes a long way.

The good thing about your kids seeing sloppy drunks, when they get older they won’t be too tempted to look like that!;)

Did anyone read the article in Mishpacha last week (sukkos edition) on the boy who was niftar (3 years ago) from substance abuse ?

I couldn’t care less on who drinks what. but for those of you who asked for a mekor I may be able to help. I never looked into it but I do know the misnah berurah in o”h siman 669 saif katan 17 says from the levush the minhag is not to duchan on simchas torah because it is commen people are drunk. What you want to learn from this I don’t care but we clearly see the minhag is over 100 years old

I lost a friend to drinking on simchas torah. this is not a joke. there’s no inion to drink on simchas torah. I don’t remember any godel or rebbe or rosh yeshivah drunk on simchas torah. to me its only the real silly people of the shull getting really drunk and the rest laughing them off. That’s the way I see it. May the yom tuv be mashpia on all of us drunk and not alike all bruches. Umen

Ive seen a Rav drunk and i think its the biggest lack of Kavod Hatorah. A Rav represents something, stands for something. getting drunk and making a fool out of himself, thats someone we should look up to? thats not a Rav.

Is he drunk by the hakufes? Because I think lchatchila you shouldn’t make kidush before being oila to the toireh which is usually after the hakufes and what matir asurim said about dichenen is because everybody is making kidush which is not aloud before dichunen but a inion to get drunk? Don’t think so. By purim I don’t think there’s any doubts its clear cut. But for simchas torah I had never seen anything about getting drunk

i spent one whole purim at the levaya of an amazing yeshiva guy who got drunk and tried to drive himself back to yeshiva. i spent one night in the emergency room watching an unconcious 15 year old fight for his life after his friends pushed him to drink. everything has a time and a place and a limit. so if you are gonna drink, know your limit and stay within that limit. and dont push anyone to do it if theyre not comfortable.

Is drinking alcohol the only way to be happy on Simchas Torah? I have written this before and I will repeat it again I applaud Young Israel of North Woodmere’s policy of not serving and drinking alcoholic beverages during Shabbos and Chagim. If people want to drink do it in your own home. This way under age drinkers are not served, as well as Shul members can prevent intoxication in the Beis Medresh…

Our shul inforces the same policy B”H. People who daven elsewhere all year come to daven here on Simchat Torah because there is a no alcohol policy. And we enjoy Simchat Torah just as much as everyone else. Probably more than everyone else cause were acutally aware of wats going on.

unfortunately most the people drinking on simchas torah are drinking for thier own pleasure and not for the real simchas torah.

I remember seeing someone who threw up during laining. He didn’t drink the next year. Ain simcha kaTorah. Simchas torah is an extension of the simchas beis hashoeva from the Beis hamikdash, and the gedolim who were dancing there weren’t drunk.

I actually think Simchas Torah should be the Only day we shouldn’t drink alcohol!

(besides for kiddush) It’s from the only days we can really be pumped up with

“100% Pure Joy!” Absolutely No Additives! etc..

C’mon man! We celebrate the Torah! you kidding me?

if one needs to take a few shots to be freilich on Simchas Torah…

    there’s something missing.

Since when did sobriety become such a negative lifestyle to practice (especially on holidays)? Although, at least with Simchat Torah, we don’t have to worry about drunk drivers, Purim on the other hand…

Just a friendly reminder, if a cop finds anyone giving a minor (anyone under the age 21) alcohol, or any minor caught drinking alcohol, can land themselves in jail over Yom Tov.

Also, for those of drinking age, you are a role model to these younger kids. Please remember that responsibility you hold before getting “drunk.”

Having a l’chaim or two, or three, on Simchas Torah is part of simchas Yom Tov, if you enjoy it and space them out. I enjoy potato kugel on Yom Tov, but too much of it at once is going to get me sick, an achilas gasa, and that is assur. Same with l’chaims. Remember that l’kavod Yom Tov, get the very best.

L-rd, get me high, get me high, get me high. L-rd, get me high, get me higher. Shlomo, we miss you.

I drink mostly on Shmini Atzeres night because we do hakafos in Chabad tonight and I have a day to rest it off if I overindulge, not that I usually do. Vodka or 96% for me, usually the former as the quality of the 96% here is questionable and when I last had it on Purim it was awful.

I stop WAY before I get out of hand.

And of course since the Creedmoorer chassidim need to drive in order to rack up some whiplash accidents on Simchas Torah, they do not drink. In any case, when one does not exist in any dimension except that of fraud, it is hard to drink.

to all of those who get very drunk [irresponsibly],

i wish & bless u – may u soon be zoiche to experience REAL true joy & pleasure in learning OUR TORAH [in depth] & being “davuk” in it & in hashem. a continuess & lasting simcha [even when ur sober].

but dont rely on my bracha – instead talk to H’ everyday & esp. on simchas torah – & ask him to help u LIVE constantly with that en joyment

Kids drinking can be nipped in the bud in two very simple ways. 1. Yeshivot should expel any boy drinking on Simchat Torah. No questions asked. 2. Pulpit rabbis should announce that they personally will call the Administration for Childrens Services, or similar agencies and file abuse/neglect reports against any parent who’s child drinks on Simchat Torah.

Yes, mesira solves everything. If you don’t believe me ask Solomon D-ek.

Also, my comment about drinking tonight refers to consuming a large amount of vodka for kiddush, not making lechaims which I do in moderation. I am usually counted on to do at least one cross armed hagboh and cannot drink or be hung over Simchas Torah morning.

    being “davuk”

Why be davuk if you can be dafuk? (Pninei Creedmoor, actually said to be a quote by the Creedmoorer-Alcatrazer Rebbetzin, Lilac Blossom Prunepit McCall SchmoigerWOMAN).

wolf- let me clarify….there is nothing wrong with drinking- a normal amount! I have nothing against alcohol and am all for a lchaim on a friday night. but what simchas torah has become is not what its supposed to be and the drinking gets out of control.
