Considering that ER is not out of league in being under-taxed and considering that ER doesn’t spend less per pubic school pupil than many other counties, I don’t think raising taxes and throwing more money at the system is the answer. Otherwise you could endlessly advocate raising taxes.

I doubt ERSD has one of the lowest tax rates in the country. Maybe in NY State, but not the US. there are plenty of places in the US where the schools taxes are real stingy

Joesph, Taxes as well as every other cost are high because we are a suburb of NYC. HMMM, it seems that every other district in our area including the districts in Rockland, Bergen and Westchester seem to vote for raising school taxes every year. I guess some people dont want to support public education even with a 2 percent tax cap.

ERSD, they dont want to support public education thats why they vote no and will likley vote no on this vote, regarless of Joseph’s post

Not sure where you are coming from ERSD, but students in Yeshivas dont usually have band, Art, Music, Football etc so they think those things are “Luxuries” and they dont want to pay for them along with stuff like AP courses again they think its unnessasary

ersd, ER isn’t under-taxed and doesn’t under-spend per PS pupil even compared to other immediate neighboring districts. ER isn’t out of league and the school tax rate or per student spending compared to the neighboring suburbs.

Joseph, it seems to me you just dont want to support public education. This is the reason a lot of people fear the orthodox moving into their area. The rallying cry is “we dont want another ER”.

Zahavasdad, I understand that, but a lot people find that universal segregated busing is a luxury. The bottom line, I think on average, the tax increase per household would be a whopping 13 dollars a month.

    ERSD

While I agree with you, they do not and to them the $13 a month is wasted money as they dont belive in Public education, Eventually what is going to happen is a state monitor is going to go in and force them to pay and remove any services the monitor feels is a luxury like segregated buses. There will be an outcry when this happens and cries of Anti-Semitism..But that is where this is leading

The state is unlikley to bail out the district , nor are any adjoining districts likely to merge as they dont want any part of this as those 2 solutions would also possibly work

ersd, some people fear the Orthodox moving into their area because they allegedly dont want to support public education, other people fear blacks or Hispanics moving into their area because allegedly they bring crime and other people fear Muslims moving into their area because allegedly they bring terrorism. Lots of people have all sorts of prejudices.

But guess what? None of them can stop the Orthodox, blacks, Hispanics or Muslims from moving into their area. There are laws against that. And that’s why there’s a US Department of Justice that stops that when a town tries to pull that off. It happened right here in Rockland County just a couple decades ago when Airmont was successfully sued and stopped by the USDOJ for trying to keep the Orthodox away. Today Airmont has a huge Orthodox population.

So despite what baselessly “seems to you”, it simply ain’t so. Desiring a low tax rate is a fairly universal objective of many people from many different ethnic background.

The budget passed. I looked at the non-public portions of the budget and was curious about two items. State funds were allocated for computer hardware ($160,000) library books ( _$145,000) . Don’t most yeshivas reject use of computers and English library books by their students? Amy chance that that this money will actually be used for computers and books?

It passed on a close vote and low turnout. And this was after a first wide voter rejection. It was a close vote even though there was no organized concerted effort to defeat it. Nevertheless it is still a shot across the brow that if in the future the private school children are contemptuously discriminated against in the budget (by the monitor rejecting additional busing or whatever), organized voter efforts will systematically reject any future tax increase, regardless of size.

    @lesschumras
How do frum kids go to shul parks, relatives etc. on Shabbos and YT?
I assume you mean because of lack of sidewalks
The are taught to be very careful and usually accompanied by a responsible adult or older sibling.
We have only 1 ortho shul in town and the police commission knows the service schedule for Shabbos and YT. They tend to send officers out on the walking routes who will assist in crossing major intersections, etc. Local drivers seeing walkers in Shabbos finery will automatically slow down and give right of way and let them cross streets. So few people walk in the suburbs (not talking about those dresses for running/exercise) that drivers take notice and are careful. The town is very proactive to serving he needs of all residents. This is still small town America, the town has approx. 35,000 residents and 28 houses of worship that I know of. Every one’s beliefs and practices are respected.
