egged is planing on offering free wifi on all intercity buses soon. nice huh? but the drivers are still clicking tickets, selling bus cards and making change for the passengers all while driving the buses. this is obviously distracting (and i dont care how long they are doing it)and could cause an accident.i sent them an email, and then came here to vent some more- thanks guys
since when is everything done according to safety? there are many things that are done that are not. maybe a hafgana will help?
Please explain what the driver has to do with wifi. I don’t understand the question.
Bus drivers in Israel (and many other places – not NY of course) have managed for many decades to give change without it being a driving hazard.
More importantly (I think) is that Egged is now running busses to and from Hevron which are NOT armored, i.e. bullet-proof (some ARE, and some are NOT). Apparently they feel that since nothing major has happened LATELY it is safe to do so (and probably cheaper to run.)
The attitudes of our yishmaeli cousins toward us have NOT changed!
If there haven’t been any serious attacks LATELY, well – B”H!!!
Will Egged have to wait until, chalila, something bad DOES happen, to get back to ONLY armored buses!?!
I believe by law that buses running in Yehuda and the Shomron must be armored. Before spreading that rumor, I would double check with Egged. All the buses here in the Shomron are armored.
mamash: they changed the law about a year or two ago and now only use mugan where they feel necessary.
its me: The other bus companies have switched to the automatic Ravkav, Egged is from the last holdouts.
I live in the shomron, the bus that I take every day from Ariel to Tel Aviv is not armored. (Though the ones that runs to Jerusalem and some of the other routes are).
The Ariel to TA buses are Afikim not egged.
All the Egged and Afikim buses from my yishuv are armored.
I personally find the kartisya more convenient because i can see when i’m running out of punches and i know to have extra cash on me. the bus drivers are very quick with ounchung that an electronic system wouldnt really be different. now that they started maavars again it takes longer though so a system would help

According to the OP, wi-fi will be offered on intercity buses. The drivers are very rarely collecting fares while driving on those buses. And what that has to do with wi-fi still escapes me.
And while we are on the subject, does anyone have any knowledge of Egged’s safety record? Are we just guessing that fare collecting is a problem, or do we have some information to back it up?
haifagirl, i think he means that the money it will cost to install wifi on the inter city buses should be used for an updated fare system on the city buses, since Eged runs them both.
All Israeli drivers are known to be safety hazards, so I dont think that automated fare systems will really help…
Although I do think its extremely scary when the driver is barrelling down a curvy street at 50 mph and not even looking where he’s going because he’s busy punching my card.
Show of hands: How many people who CURRENTLY live in Eretz Yisroel and regularly travel on buses would prefer wi-fi on intercity buses? How many people would prefer an updated fare system?
My hand was raised for the first. The fare system works fine for me. If somebody has proof that the current method poses a safety hazard, please cite the source.
It would be nice to have wi-fi when I’m traveling between cities, which I frequently have to do for work.
Personally I don’t need Egged’s WiFi – I have a 3G phone that can be used either as a WiFi router or as a modem via USB or Bluetooth (Nokia E72).
But I do think it’s a great idea, it may drag some people to the bus instead of using their cars.
I don’t see the safety issue here, like most. I really just fail to see any relation between WiFi and safety. It’s not like the driver is going to be using the WiFi while driving, right?
Now I have plenty of complaints about Egged as well as the other bus companies here. But this is in fact a positive thing. I just wish they would do it on inner city buses also.
An interesting question: will this be available on ‘mehadrin’ buses like the 402 and 418 as well? Or will the driver get a switch to disable the WiFi when the bus is doing a ‘mehadrin’ line? Or are they going to designate specific buses for ‘mehadrin’ lines only?

There is a bus line running between Kfar Saba/Ra’anana and Tel Aviv that has wi-fi. I think the company is called Metropolin, or something like that.
Could anyone who CURRENTLY lives in EY update those of us who dont as to the situation now with wifi and fare ticketing system? Or any other interesting pieces of information. Thanx.
I was on an Egged 417 from Yerushalayim to Beit Shemesh a few days ago. There was no internet. There is nothing on the Egged website about internet.
As far as I know, the only bus company in Israel with internet is Metropolin, and only on their intercity buses. I won’t have anything in access internet with on the buses until this fall, so it doesn’t affect me . . . yet.
I have seen a 417 from RBS with WiFi and egged is switching over to RavKav as well.
