“Ritual living and extreme conformity harm society by suppressing individual freedom, fostering shallow materialism, and enabling groupthink that can lead to large-scale cruelty in the name of social norms. When societal norms become rigid rituals, they obscure moral decision-making, allowing organizations to prioritize rules over goals (bureaucratic ritualism) and preventing necessary social change towards the good.

People feel they have no choice but to conform due to defensive conformity driven by social anxiety, fear of embarrassment, and the desire for acceptance. This pressure is reinforced by social sanctions, including ostracism or punishment for non-conformists, and the self-categorization bias where individuals assume the majority behavior is inherently correct. Additionally, the concept of “fallenness” describes how individuals forfeit freedom by allowing themselves to be enslaved by faceless societal expectations, mistaking conventionality for safety.

This prob explains the insane materialism going on. It’s just another face of the coin of extreme conformity.

No. If anything, extreme anxiety leads to attempt at conformity. Every person is an individual, and even in an insular society such as ours there is ample oppurtunity for individualism. Only those who are dealing with emotional issues feel an extreme need to conform in an unhealthy manner.

I would argue that extreme anxiety leads to attempts at conformity. A healthy awareness of who one is leads to being comfortable in expressing his individuality.
