During our Chol Hamoed trips with our children, I saw something that really bothered me. It seems that a lot of frum pre/teenage girls like to play on Dance Revolution machines at the Arcades. I do know if the girls realize it is a problem, if the arcades are not exclusively rented out just to girls, that men will watch them dance. I saw frum girls dancing on these games and men, including Goyim were watching them. I specifically saw a goyish male standing watching a girl and then I realized this is a very serious problem. I think that Parents and Teachers should inform the girls that it is a problem and they should not be on them and they are dancing in front of men. I was wondering if any one else felt the same way about this situation.

yup mazal, u r right on target. i myself happen to LOVE dance dance revolution, but after dancing on one in an arcade and convincing myself no one was watching and then realizing afterwards that heck, who am i kidding, i kinda had to stop. for those who are hard to convince, there are home versions that connect to playstation, xbox, wii, etc that are actualy really good.

Based on your post, I discussed this a few minutes ago with my wife and kids – they were in an arcade on Chol HaMoed. Mrs. YW Moderator-72 noticed this also. She told our girls that they are not allowed on this game. Good Post.

mazal, you should write it to the yated, it’ll reach a larger audience. oh, btw, glad to have ya back!

mod 72, Mrs. 72, wouldn’t happen to be mazal… maybe 77 was the number on her jersey?

Mazal and Mrs. 72 are not the same person – not to say that Mrs. 72 does not have a whole lot of Mazel to actually be Mrs. 72! :o) YW Moderator-72

Believer- it’s not that u don’t see pple but that pple. see ya. that’s why a bas melech isn’t really allowed to wear something revealing because than they’ll attract attention. and wat difference does it make if you ever see them again. you’re still giving them an impression of a jewish frum girl.

    Agree 100%

Funny Story – I was doing dance revolution once (I’m a guy) and some frum teenage girl came over and stood really close and started sticking her foot out to do the ones that were near her.

    Talk about awkward!

Believer, there are jewish men around, too. If the place was rented out exclusively to girls, then it wouldn’t be a problem. Everyone see’s you dancing at these arcades. And though you can’t see the people looking out, and if you were one of the girls who was dancing, I can tell you, I was watching some of those men who may have been looking at you, and trust me, If it were me, I would NOT want people looking at me. If I danced in public like that, on those games. It’s not like I am at a wedding with a mechitzah and a man purposely comes to watch, that would not be my fault, but in this case, where you are in the public eye, then a girl who dances on these machines are at fault. If you enjoy dancing, join a all-girls dance group and dance in private, not public. I love to dance myself, but there is a time and place for everything, and the Dance Revloution games are totally in appropriate for a frum girl to be on.

hi there! i’ve been checking out various jewish websites and happened to come across this one and decided to join the coffee room.this particular thread caught my eye and i was reading about you guys saying you all need a shrink(by the way-i do not like this derogotory name used to describe this proffesion that really does wonders to people). my name is Dr. blank(i won’t give out my name on this forum) and would like to be of help to those in need. i’m here-it’s good to get it all out sometimes.

As for the whole girls on the DDR. If you really feel the need you can tell them its not tznius but dont do it in front of other people (especially if there are nonjews around) and dont push it, say it once and then move on.

I agree! However, each girl really has to make the decision for herself on how she wants to act in public.

Now, lets add some fuel to the fire – how do you all feel about girls playing sports in public parks?

I also can’t believe I agree that this is not proper–if you believe you’re not allowed to dance in front of guys, why is it okay to do it on a machine? (I’m not saying I haven’t done it…but I don’t represent a certain type of person.)I think that if a girl is dressed very religious, it looks worse than if she looks MO. Not sure why, maybe it’s a double standard, or maybe it’s becuase you’d expect differently from a person dressed a certain way.

Kapusta – care to explain what you meant that that was for me?

    #689164

Lucy asked me to tell everyone that she is NOT the user “shrink”. She has been offering mental health help since before shrink was born and still only charges 5 cents. (hey, I just noticed there’s no “cents” symbol on the keyboard). Come in for an appointment with the original and best!

If they are dressed appropriately and wearing good supportive sports garments underneath, I say go for it! Why should only the boys have fun?

What might be wrong, is for girls to be playing in public where they can accidentally get uncovered. A closed gym would be a better option.

she said that a teacher said it’s not tzniyus and that it’s like dancing.

Technically, women are meant to be in the home, so even walking outside is not recommended.

ok- let’s not get into where women belong. This was discussed many times over in various tznius threads. If we’re still arguing that means those previous arguments did not serve a purpose and/or we are not ready to agree (yet)

So here’s the thing – I am curious altogether as to how frum tzniusdig girls, brought up in the Yeshivishe world of Bais Yaakov and the like, even know HOW to dance like the nisht unzerer. I never fail to be surprised when I am at a chasunah and see the girls, who are dancing away behind the mechitzah of course, but nevertheless where did they learn how to do these wild gyrations? If they don’t watch TV, don’t go to the movies, don’t use the internet for nefarious purposes, and live tzniusdig lifestyles, how are they sufficiently exposed to goyishe dancing, to be able to imitate it at a frum simcha? I personally HAVE been exposed to this most of my life, saw it on TV, etc, but I did not grow up in Boro Park, Williamsburg, Lakewood, or Monsey. So who taught them this stuff?

    oomis – i don’t know – i’m never on that side 😉

just kidding – how innocent do you think they really are? even if THEY didn’t watch it themselves they probably picked it up from someone who did. that’s my guess.

oomis, on a bit of a tangent, have you ever watched the BY type school plays? Well, if you’ve noticed, many of the dances have steps straight off ‘Lord of the Dance’. These girls have more exposure than we think they do.

Hey everyone! Just stopping by and saw this thread. It’s pretty funny cuz I was just having a party on the dance revolution on chol hamoed. I don’t think people realize how it looks when they’re the ones doing it. Great point Mazal77! Thanx!

Oomis, the girls that know how to dance have definately watched movies or dance videos. The girls that are really sheltered definately don’t know how to move that way.

moish and myshadow have a point- a lot of these girls, even if they do not see it first hand, unfortunatly pick it up from the ones that do

why do you have to be exposed to the “nisht oonzerer” way of dancing- all u have to do is move a bit and ur good to go!!and the dance machine isnt necessarily dancing the way you think it is- u dont dance u justmove ur feet!!!

hey oomis and wat exactly are you doing looking by the mechitza!!!especially since theyre not dancing right!!!
