I know someone whose shidduch didn’t go through because he had once drove a red camry (for only a week or two).

So I can understand why some in the yeshiva community might consider a ‘cool’ car like a Ford Mustang to be “goyish”. Don’t ask me why exactly, because I don’t know. That’s just the way it is. I can only remember one time that I saw a frum person driving this car, which is extremely popular in America.

Though I’m sure that many of you are going to jump on me and say “what do you mean. I/my mother/my sister drives this car!” Relax. I am talking about the very yeshivish communities of Lakewood and Boro Park (and maybe some parts of Monsey), where I live. Though everyone is welcome to comment. Just please say where you are from.

So, girls, will you date a guy who drives a Mustang in say a conservitave color like black or silver? And fathers with girls in shidduchim, will you consider a shiddush for your daughter with a guy who drives a Mustang (or something similar, like a Camaro, for that matter)?

One more thing, I am not asking what you would like to do, if not that you were pressured to conform to your community. I am asking what you really would do, if someone approached you with such a shidduch, because peer pressure affects us whether we like it or not. And remember to please say where you are from!

    Thank you!

Personally I happen to not think mustangs are cool so I wouldn’t care if he has a mustang or not (Boro park) but if he bought it to be cool than I probably wouldn’t date him in the first place cause I don’t date wannabes.but why are u asking in the first place?:)

It’s possible that someone who drives a Mustang or Camaro just happens to be into cars, which is not a bad thing. It’s the same as someone who is into clothes, music, or any sort of commodity (Just a bit more expensive). Although, the Mustang is the typical “Look at me, I have a cool car, and I really want a Ferrari but can’t afford it, so I’m stuck with this” car. So maybe you should be a little wary. For the record, I am pretty into cars myself, and I can tell you that a Mustang is just an American muscle car that is complete rubbish (like most American cars). So if I were approached about a prospective shidduch for someone who drives a Mustang, I would ask why he has it over something else. I would not say “no” because of it. That would be shallow.

Oops, almost forgot to say where I am located: Not on the East coast.

I am asking because I know someone who is not married and is considering buying a mustang. And it doesn’t really matter if you think that they are cool or not since about 99% of the world does. There is a reason why it has been featured in more than 500 movies and hundreds of tv shows, probably more than any other car ever made (until Michael Bay came along in 2009 and used a yellow camaro for transformers 1).

Anyway cool could mean many different things, maybe you don’t mean the same thing that I do when I use cool in this context, but this isn’t the place to get into that.

Anyway, what is your idea of a “cool” car (and don’t say something like a Lamborghini, we are talking about a $25,000 dollar car here. But if you want to say a luxury sports car, go ahead, just nothing more than $100,000, aight)?

Even if I would make say $150,000 dollars this year and can afford a brand new luxury car, it is quite likely that I would go for the mustang first, or possibly a camaro which is very similar, before I would buy an $80,000 lexus or infinity, even though I could afford it

I would hope no shver would ever date a guy, no matter what car he drives. As for his daughter…..

There is an interesting story in the rereleased book “Reb Moshe” about a bachur of his who drove a Mustang (I’m almost positive it was a mustang) with tinted windows. He once gave his Rebbe a ride.and he told him it is the best car he was ever in. It had to do with the tinted windows, not the capabilities of the car.

I’m from Flatbush. I would have no issues with allowing my daughter to go out with a bachur who drove a Mustang or Camaro. In fact, I might be less inclined to allow her to date a bachur who drove a Lexus or Mercedes. Given that she is still in pre-school I’m not overly worried about this right now, perhaps as she got closer to shidduchim and I had to take this from theoretical to actual, I might change my mind.

Driving through Flatbush and Borough Park, you can look into many of the house and see beautiful chandiliers and what seems to be remolded houses and sometimes even brand new houses.

This does not seem to bother people, but someone drives a Mustang or a nicer car, this bothers. Why is it ok to have a nice house and not a nice car.

Many people spend alot of time in their cars, commuting or maybe their jobs require them to be in their cars alot. If you are going to spend alot of time in the car anyway. Why shouldnt it be nice.

I think it depends on why he drives the car. If he’s a speed freak (not cosidering the health risks involved) then I don’t think it’s a problem. But if it really is because he wants to be seen and be seen in this way, it kind of gives you a glimpse about the person’s pnimius that’s not so desirable in a responsible husband

i have to totally disagree with you when you call the Mustang rubbish. Its not really the topic under discussion, but what is your idea of a car for $25,000 that isn’t ‘rubbish’?

quark2, I like your interest! For $25,000, if I wanted something reliable with good performance as well, I would get an Acura RSX, Infiniti G37, Mazda Rx8, or a BMW 3 Series, all over a Mustang. Granted, some of the cars I mentioned would have to be a few years old to be $25,000, but that’s fine with me.

aha, so what you are saying is that you couldn’t find a car that compares to the Mustang in its own price range, so you had to go to luxury cars that sell new for more than double its price.

Which means that the only car that is better than the Mustang for cars in its price range is the Mazda. And I thought that the Mustang is rubbish. But it comes in second place.

Now that I think about it, if this bachur was a baal middos and drove his car to 3 sedarim a day, did chessed with this car such as making deliveries for tomchei shabbos and was an otherwise good bachur, I wouldn’t care what type of car he drove.

quark2: Sorry, but you seem to have put words in my mouth. You appear to think I said that no car can compare with a Mustang in its price range, when I simply listed PERFORMANCE COUPES that are better, and can sometimes be found as cheap, as the Mustang. There are plenty of new cars I would get for $25,000 before a mustang, but they may not offer the same horsepower as it. But they sure are better made and much more reliable than the Mustang. I would get any brand new Honda, Toyota, or Nissan before a Mustang. (By the way, the Civic type R is just as powerful as the Mustang.) I would also get any VW, Volvo, Subaru, or Hyundai before a Mustang. (By the way, the Golf GTI and the Subaru Impreza WRX both get the same power as a Mustang.) All these cars can be bought new for around $25,000.

show-me-off? perhaps with the sprewel rims, the souped up muffler and paint job. otherwise, it is no more a show-me-off car than the new infiniti/lexus crossovers which seems to be quite popular in the neighborhoods mentioned by the OP.

Seriously??? Someone dropped a guy because of his car???? Who cares?? He probably got a good deal on it or his other car was in the shop, what does that have to do with what type of guy he is?

Yeah I would date someone who drives a Mustang, or a Camry (and my father would probably too because he owned a Camry).

I thank G-d I don’t live in any of those places if this is the craziness that goes on there. I don’t want to say where I live but lets just say I don’t live in Brooklyn or Lakewood or some out-of-town community.

“Why is it ok to have a nice house and not a nice car?”

Becuase an in-your-face, gouge-your-eyes-out fancy house, shiny chandelier is shpitz baal baatish, whereas a jaw dropping pony is echt shkutzivatish.

(And IMHO a poor choice anyways, because the camaro is MUCH cooler, so if that’s any indication of how he going to sqander my daughter’s money… )

Pac man you must be the most yeshivish guy on the internet lol. Are you currently in yeshivah or kollel?

BTW remember our debate over wether cars are more dangerous than dogs? Well we crunched the numbers and we found that cars are not double, not quadruple, not 10x, not even 100x, but a whopping 220 TIMES more dangerous than dogs.

In fact, you have about a 10 times greater chance of being struck by lightning than getting killed by a dog. So dogs are quite safe

middle path you got me there. You seem to know a lot about cars for a girl. A lot more than me, anyway.

But let me ask you something. If all of those cars get the same power as the Mustang, why don’t they compete in drag races. Why do only Mustangs Camaros Challengers and other muscle cars compete?

dodge charger and camaro are both cooler than the mustang in my opinion. And personally, I’d rather a sport sedan for its functionality once you actually get that shidduch iyh… sonata turbo and the others mentioned above. That shows you are thinking about the future today, even if we are speed freaks.

    Quark2: I’m actually not a girl. I’m curious why you thought I was…

About the muscle car drag racing, it is true that in America, you will rarely see exotic car racing of any form, and everything is muscle cars, because America is the birthplace of the modern muscle car. America thrives on tradition. Which is partly why the American auto industry is practically dead, but that’s a whole separate discussion. (I wrote a paper on it in college.)If you were to go to Europe, and more specifically, Germany and Italy, you would see all types of races, both street and track, are done with European exotics (Porsches, BMW’s, Mercedes’, Lambos, Lotus’, etc..) There’s actually a movement in European cars to try to produce a “muscle” car. So far, the closest thing to it would be the Mercedes CL63 AMG.

I can go on for days talking about cars, but I’ll stop there for now.

Middle path I thought that you were a girl because of these words from your first post:

“So if I were approached about a prospective shidduch for someone who drives a Mustang, I would ask why he has it over something else.”

That sounded like you were a girl who gets approached for shidduchim. But now that you say that you aren’t I guess that it just means that you have a shidduch age daughter…
