    Anyone know of some good board games to play on dates? Preferably something semi-intelligent and not just luck. The two I’ve tried so far are trivial pursuit which went horribly and bananagrams which was okay except it’s not so interactive.

    Scrabble.

    Backgammon.

    Whenever I play those games, I always manage to maintain a good conversation while playing. And, of course, they’re fun.

    scattergories is a good game to play on a date you get to see how the person thinks…

    I would advise against playing any games. Most of my friends who played board games on dates didn’t like it at all.

    I invented a two player version of bananagrams specifically for dating.

    The object is to have the most pieces in your crossword.

    You each start with 21 pieces. You take one new piece whenever you finish all your pieces. If you are unable to place any pieces, you can put three in, and take out one.

    Whoever has more pieces wins. (Really, whoever gets past half first.)

    Now, I caution, that this version is really annoying, but it is fun if only you know that it is annoying.

    i bought a game in amazing savings for $5 its called pulling your leg…its a bunch of cards with questions you ask each other. you can learn a lot about the other person and helps a person open up. also u can say things about urself without it being awkward.

    before a boy decides to do s/t fun and diff on a date he shd make sure that the girl will like and app it. i think it is best to check with the shadchan. i know from myself that when i go out with a bochur, i want to hear and learn things about him, not play a game or do s/t fun….i just want to b able to talk and hear and understand what he is saying, be it in a hotel lobby or walking in a park. i find that many times the boy would like to show he is “fun” “cool” or “with it” and decide to do s/t fun, i do not appreciate doing s/t “fun” or “diff” with a random boy i may not marry.

    Scattergories can be a bit more interactive. Or if you are really daring, you can play a game called Loaded Questions (classic game). – (google it). I’ve played it on a date and it actually went very well. We did’t quite follow the rules of the game, but used the deck of cards as a means of conversation and getting to know the other person better. The way we played the game was that each person had a stack of cards and every turn chose a category of a type of question they want to be asked, such as a hypothetical, no-brainer, or personal question. The questions can be quite funny! Some of the questions may need to be skipped and also this game should not be played on one of the first few dates. (I played it on a 5th date.)

    Enjoy! & good luck!

    Taboo (it’s not like it sounds), charades, Scrabble, come to mind.

    Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Checkers…

    Why would someone not like board games on a date? It is a whole lot better than sitting in a lounge, drinking over-priced sodas with no conversation starters…. Isn’t the point of dating to see how the other person thinks, acts ect in real life? Its not just if they come on time or say thank you to the man in the car lot. How competitive are they? Can they stand to lose a game?

    Charades might not be a great game to play…especially if she is in heels and since it can get into uncomfortable situations.

    But what about pictionary, especially if the guy starts off saying “I can’t draw…” so that way she doesn’t feel embarrassed by her (non)-artistic skills?

    It makes a girl feel like she’s being tested which quite frankly is the reason many guys choose to bring games along.

    I love Charades, in or out of heels, and it highlights a person’s sense of humor.

    Thanks for all the help. I’m going to try scattegories, I think.

    @rasha gamur

    I like playing board games because they’re fun. Why would you do anything other than sit and talk in a lounge?

    @dunno

    Not sure what you mean by being tested. If you mean testing to see if it would be a good match and if you can enjoy each other’s company, then yes. If you mean testing to see how well she performs in the game and to see if she should win-then no, that’s quite ridiculous and not true at all.

    I have participated in The Ungame.

    I wouldn’t say I’ve played it, as it is not a game at all.

    #1280858

    >http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/lounge-in-queens>This thread< is relevant (although it doesn’t have many game suggestions).

    (Codenames: Duet might be better for a date. It won’t be available for
    some time, though – even its full finalized details aren’t out yet.)

    Having seen the full details for Codenames: Duet, I don’t know whether to recommend it for dates.
    It’s cooperative, so you win or lose together, but it’s challenging.

    Where do dates play these board games? In the lounge at the Marriott?

    #1362332

    According to the owner of The Uncommons (a Manhattan board game cafe), it’s
    popular for dates among whoever he means by “the Hasidic Jewish community.”

    He probably means guys who wear yarmulkas. Some people think that anyone who wears a yarmulka is chassidish.
