Does being a single hatzolah volunteer have a positive or negative affect on shidduchim?

Oh, I thought you were suggesting that hatzolo people make shidduchim between people from the houses they go into, since they see everyone at their worst.

I sounds like it would violate HIPPA

People would feel more safe going on a date with you.

Depends if you are male or female.

Definitely positive if you have a DOT parking permit and can park all over manhattan for free.

(And for all the haters who say that is abusing it, it isn’t. Because part of the purpose is that your car should be near you in case you have an emergency. And there are situations where you would help someone even on a date, like if someone collapses at the restaurant you’re in.)

from what i hear regarding resume`s any type of chesed is welcome so whether you are male or female volunteering for ezras nashim(womens hatzalah) or for regular mens hatzalah i would think it would be a definite plus and can only help you !

Definite plus in MY book. The ONLY downside (and it really should not be considered as such), is the same one as with anyone in a medical field where the services might be needed unexpectedly or in the middle of the night). Hatzolah members (and I feel that Chaverim also merit this) are malachim.

Is chessed really prized on a man’s resume?

Do men really have a resume? (I sure never did.)

It is completely neutral. If you are a hatzolah volunteer and want to find someone who is ok with that and don’t want to find someone who is not ok with that, being a hatzolah volunteer will mean you won’t end up with someone who is not ok with that. On the other hand, the people who agree to go out with you will be ok with it. So it works out completely.

Popa, why would you need a car to get to to the restaurant which you’re already in?

i know that they had to make shana rishona gedarim for hatzoloh members in certain areas because of sholom bayis i.e.:calls late at night, too many calls

I don’t know about other cities, but Hatzolah of Lakewood only accepts married members.

the only single guys i know who are in hatzolah are just interested in the “excitiment”, not there just for the chessed part of it.

    #1007272

my father was already in hatzolah when my parents got married and my mother had no problem with it except she often says how when they go out to dinner thats when he needs to go to a call and she is left dining by herself….. 🙂

emesvyatziv: Why? Personally I want to become an EMT- ever since I saw someone collapse in shul and we had to wait for a guy to come over to help, I’ve known that this is something important.

There’s actually a women’s EMT course in my area that I considered taking and would have taken if not for school and pesky things like that.

There are always those things in shidduchim where people say that if he doesn’t like this or this about me then I don’t want him, and sometimes they don’t make sense, but honestly if I did end up becoming an EMT- maybe even for Hatzolah or some similar organization- and someone rejected me because of that, that would be a deal-breaker on my end also.

Once upon a time I did volly work, not anymore.

    Question of the day:

Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?

Don’t Hatzalah members have to be married prior to joining? I thought singles were not accepted.

    “Question of the day:

health- you dont but as an emt and / or a hatzalah member you have more knowledge ,supplies, and resources at your fingertips and more equipped to deal with situations that come up quickly and easily compared to just knowing cpr and first aid . although if your not going to become an emt its definetly beneficail to know cpr/aed and first aid !

Health: I’m actually CPR/first aid certified (I’m a lifeguard), but basically what jackinthebox said. I’d like to be as confident, equipped and knowledgeable as possible- I want to be just as qualified and helpful as those Hatzolah guys, not an interim measure.

although some ppl who are trained in CPR/First Aid actually know what they’re doing, most don’t. Trust me- I’ve seen ppl who are “trained in CPR/First aid” use their “skills”…. an average EMT knows a lot more than those who are “trained” in CPR/First Aid

    #1007281

Everyone IMO should be trained in CPR properly. It should be as much part and parcel of Yeshivah education as math and science (and is probably a more practical skill to know than how to figure out tangents and quadrilateral equasions). And we should all take refresher courses. This applies to anyone who has a child or doesn’t, who is married or is not, who is old or young – EVERYBODY should know what to do in an emergency UNTIL hatzolah gets there. Sometimes you have literally SECONDS to save a life.

justbecause- as i said before and writersoul pointed out , the more you know the better ! it doesent mean that all ppl who learn cpr/aed and first aid ( i happen to also be a lifeguard) dont know what they are doing! you are grouping everyone together that we all that are trained in cpr/aed first aid lifeguard etc. all dont know what we are doing ! you are definetly right some are certified and have no clue but you have no right to generalize and say

“although some ppl who are trained in CPR/First Aid actually know what they’re doing, most don’t.”

its not true lots of ppl do !

i agree with oomis; everyone should know the basics!

a simple CPR course can take you a couple of hours and First aid maybe a couple more.

its a cheap, easy, and quick course that everyone should take.

Just shed a few hours on a sunday off of your YWN CoffeeRoom time 🙂

jackinthebox- the information you learn in a course is important and very useful however you can’t compare one who KNOWS what do to one who HAS EXPERIENCE doing it.

and for all of those who are taking CPR/First Aid course- Kudos to you!

but i request of you all to make sure you actually PAY ATTENTION during the course and every once in a while look on (website not mentioned due to treifness) to see how these skills are done, refresh your knowledge and don’t be that person who doesn’t know what to do when someone collapses in shul or at a restaurant!

So what if single guys join Hatzolah for the excitement? Goody for them. They need action, and found a way to get it that is (a) a mitzvah, and (b) provides a service to the community. What could be better?

wallflower: the problem with the thrill is that once they get married and the “thrill” of a new marriage fades, they will be looking for the thrill of hatzoloh calls and the nitty gritty that a marriage needs in order to work will be lacking and might strain the marriage as the wife can feel something is more important than she is. thats why shana rishona guidelines are needed and why single guys shouldn’t be allowed on

there is an old saying that until you live in those shoes, dont comment. well i lived in those shoes and it made no difference to anyone who was suggesting a shidduch. the offers were coming furiously.

however; some comments were appropriate certainly the ones who joinn for the excitement, “hock. while this is the minority it includes many more marrieds than singles. in the end its about maturity

notsuchalamdan16- are you proposing that Hatzolah causes people to get divorced?

and just remember the single guys are the ones who generally have more time to go on calls; without them the married guys would have to leave more often.

notsuchalamdan16- which causes more divorces the married hatzolah guys taking too many calls because their are no single guys around to take the calls? or having single guys on hatzolah and giving them the thrill of hatzolah calls which continue through marriage also?

I’m not going to answer all those other comments, but yours – because I posted to you originally. After I finished EMT and then Medic school I went further in my education. From my POV, being an EMT is the bottom rung of the ladder. This isn’t to knock EMT’s – just to make you realize – the reality. Of course, EMT’s are integral part of the EMS system. Going back to my original comment of “Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?”, I feel s/o who practices good CPR & First Aid is just as valuable, if not more, than EMS guys!

    EMT=Basic Lift and Shlep

Health is right; EMT’s are an integral part of the EMS system but what they actually do is Basic Lift and Shlep (for the most part)

I disagree, EMTs are the one helping the patients breath.

It all starts with the ABCs, its not the meds it is the ABCs! Basic CPR or bleeding control is more important than ALS.

    Thats from an ALS provider..

sorry i didn’t mean it like that.

i was referring to a little joke that they say about EMT’s in the private ambulance industry.

EMT’s are BLS Providers as opposed to Medics who are ALS providers; they say that

    BLS= Basic Lift and Shlep

because in the private industry thats what the emts Mostly do. of course EMT’s do save lives and are trained in many life saving techniques i was just referring to that little joke.

as a 10 year EMT working on hatzolah and private i would have to agree that in the private industry its mostly Basic Lift and Shlep but on Hatzolah its more…..

Health: I also want to become a doctor. I don’t necessarily have EMT as my high point as far as a career. I just feel like it’s the next step, and like mavmav said, in Hatzolah EMTs have a lot more to deal with.

I don’t know obviously that I’d go from EMT to paramedic unless I actually wanted to become a paramedic for a living (not exactly a big moneymaker…), but EMT is a much more reasonable investment and one that I think is something I can really do as I am.

“It all starts with the ABCs, its not the meds it is the ABCs! Basic CPR or bleeding control is more important than ALS.”

Now you get what I started off with -“Why do you need to become an EMT to practice CPR & First Aid?”, I feel s/o who practices good CPR & First Aid is just as valuable, if not more, than EMS guys!” It’s Not the EMT’s, but the BLS itself.

Also, FYI most medical students Don’t have any allied health professions before they go to med school.

just some input on this whole thing about someone who practices CPR/First Aid may be batter than an EMT……

true that they may have more knowledge on this specifics if they constantly practice but i don’t think that you can compare one who practices a lot to one who actually does patient care on a daily basis

I actually like having multiple interests. (Subject-wise, I love science, history and writing, just to iron that out.)

The fact that I want to become a doctor relates to my wanting to become an EMT only insofar as both help people medically- something that I’m really passionate about.
